By the time robots are capable of running a coffee club, there will be no need for a coffee club.

AI is already linked to layoffs in the industry that created it
https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/04/tech/ai-tech-layoffs/index.html

This CEO replaced 90% of support staff with an AI chatbot
https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/12/business/dukaan-ceo-layoffs-ai-chatbot/index.html

The workers already replaced by artificial intelligence
https://www.bbc.com/news/business-65906521

Tech companies are slashing thousands of jobs as they pivot toward AI
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tech-layoffs-artificial-intelligence-ai-chatgpt/

I hope the coffee club members have enough dividend income in their Fidelity accounts to support their homes, RVs, boats and 60k cars in Shelby.

I'll just leave some things here.

Connect the dots. Is this the new template for America?

I like to think that robot would run the finest coffee club that GM has ever known.

Think about the technological leap between a language model to one where novel, high definition video and audio can be generated by artificial intelligence without very specific cues. Can this technology balance a check book, design an automobile, diagnose a disease or teach a classroom? Can it defend you in court?

What if you paired it with a robot? At this stage, do you know if a human is writing this? Could you prove your answer definitively? Do you think you can compete with Artificial General Intelligence?

Down-vote this to make it go away. Your career, 401k/pension, well being and standard of living is very secure. Take the rest of the day off. Enjoy some processed snack food and a good movie.

"It's a tough market for everyone because of high interest rates, inflation and debt."
@1lmt+1rzO50K7

Nice take.

  1. I think the US is flailing around right now trying to get into a major war to prop up this fake economy, maybe something similar to WW2.

Europe of course will get sacrificed again. :-)

  1. All the foreigners coming in will be drafted into the US military where they will

work for the rich to police the US citizens. They will have no loyalty to the US citizens or culture. Also they are getting money from the rich so there will be little risk of a coup.

The work visas will continue until morale improves.

If techies are getting laid off, that means there's no shortage, and no need for H1bs and L1s, right?

Visas revoked?

At least they can't outsource plumbing jobs to Bangalore like software.

It's a tough market for everyone because of high interest rates, inflation and debt.
Here's what's next:

  • Between now and June, we will see many more layoffs.
  • At the beginning of June, you will hear about record foreclosures.
  • The people faking the data to create the illusion of prosperity for Brandon will NOT be able to keep the farce (fake employment numbers, fake GDP data, fake CPI data, etc) going before November. The anger from the public will not change anything though for reasons I will not get into here.
  • The mounting foreclosures will create negative momentum on interest rates and as the volume of housing inventory greatly increases, housing prices will plummet. Don't get super excited because this will be a slow roll. It's actually happening now. The housing bubble actually popped but the greed of sellers and artificial scarcity of foreclosed homes and new builds are holding things in place (for now).
  • All those people who paid over asking price at high interest rates for homes in the last year or so will start feeling the burn as the "upside down" effect will be tremendous. Many of these people will walk away from their homes.
  • As many consumers are burning cash and have already maxed out the cards, many will pull out of the stock market. There absolutely will be a market crash in the October-late November. This will also have a temporary effect on precious metals and bitco1n.
  • By the end of the year, the global economy will see the beginning of the next great recession.
  • Support for foreign wars and visitors will wane as regular Americans look to big brother for a helping hand. They won't receive it.
  • I suspect that Brandon will be POTUS again in 2025 (for reasons I won't get into here) and the people behind him will fully own what they have done to America.
  • We will see big corporations face headwinds like never before. Familiar brands and companies will no longer exist.
  • Don't be surprised if while all of this is happening, the people running Brandon start up the draft and go to full scale war with R. There will be unrest!
  • Enjoy this post before it's taken down.

@1lwc+1rzO50K7 Ironically plumbing and many other blue collar professions are also experiencing their own flood of people due to shill advertisement campaigns.

Relevant for anyone you know who's about to go to college:
https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/16/worst-paying-college-majors-five-years-after-graduation.html

IT/Tech isn't on the list but I wonder how much interest it will get after 2024.
Anyone who lets their kid get an Anthropology or Fine Arts degree will get all the grief they deserve. Better not convert their old bedroom into a study! If they aren't couch surfing, they are going to be living with you until you die.

Of course. There are a lot of laid off software engineers vying for very few opportunities available. Have you looked online? Most are in-office only. Playtime is over.

@1pmk+1rzO50K7
"I work less because of ChatGPT".
And they heavily invest in AI.
Its as if persecuted Germans invested in IG Farben in the 30's.

Regarding the article, this situation was inevitable.
People who should be positioning themselves for the future need to be honest with themselves and willing to make some difficult choices. Any job that works with data or customer service is going to get crushed by AI paired with data collection.
Even McJobs are in danger due to automation. Time to use those tech minds to find contrarian solutions.

Years and years of H1Bs and L-visa imports. Years and years of shill "learn to code", "girls who code", "a day in the life of a developer" advertising campaigns. Years and years of money being pumped into tech companies without result to just hire thousands and thousands of useless tech workers. Years and years of kids being pressured to go into tech and are now graduating college with no job prospects.

Now, years later, we reap what we went along with all of these years. I got into software dev because I loved it, before this tsunami of "talent" flooded the market. In hindsight, I should have gone into medicine. I still love working at GM, however.

I hate how easily lead tech workers are to their own demise. Never complaining about outsourcing, or work visa immigration floods because of reasons.

When strong AI platforms were released to the world, insyead of treating it as an existential threat to our profession, developers ate it up and started claiming "use it or become obsolete", or, "I work less because of ChatGPT". We're overall thr biggest pile of id--ts in the white collar world. We're always working against our own interests for short term gain or lazyness.

Finally, I actually love GM, and am here for the entertainment facor and rumor mills. Many of you don't realize how well we have it.

Well I can tell you that a software engineer resigned a few weeks and while I am still working on approvals to backfill, I am inundated with emails about the position.
I had never seen so much interest for a yet to be announced opening.
