Thread regarding 3M layoffs

I was recently removed from a project under the pretext of "not being able to adequately adapt to 3M Technology." This has left me contemplating retirement from precious Mother Mining. It's disheartening to feel sidelined based on a perceived inability to adapt, especially after 46 dedicated years to this company. While I understand the need to stay current with technological advancements, it's concerning that my experience and expertise are being overlooked. I know my time to transition into retirement is coming soon, but to force me out like this is unacceptable

3M's culture has included covert age discrimination for the last 20 years. Age discrimination is actively practiced but never acknowledged. 3M's class action lawsuit loss took the practice underground.
Eventually our company will be caught red handed like it has before. Someone will include the bias in an email, text or will be said in a management meeting. When it does happen, be sure to record the conversation or print out the email. Make notes who was there, what was said, date and time. Contact a good attorney.

46 years is a liability not a badge of honor…. That’s why we are stuck where we are. All employees 30+ must be force retired. That’s not ageism it’s progress!

2011 - Global technology giant 3M (NYSE: MMM) has agreed to pay $3 million to a class of former employees and implement preventive measures to resolve a nationwide age discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.

The EEOC's suit charged that 3M unlawfully laid off hundreds of employees over the age of 45 during a series of reductions in force (RIFs) from July 1, 2003 through Dec. 31, 2006. 3M laid off many highly paid older employees, among others, apparently to save money and cut workers in salaried positions up to the level of director, the agency said. The EEOC also asserted that older employees were denied leadership training and laid off to make way for younger leaders. The agency's investigation found an employee e-mail describing then-CEO Jim McNerney's "vision for leadership development" as "we should be developing 30 year olds with General Manager potential" and "He wants us to tap into the youth as participants in the leadership development."

3M is famous for age discrimination. McNerney introduced the practice as part of Six Sigma.

Firing people right before they qualify for a pension is a huge ROI for the most ethical company in the world 🌎. 3M lost a 7 year age discrimination class action lawsuit 12 years ago. HR and leadership now know how to execute age discrimination without getting caught. Occasionally true colors are shown and if you are lucky enough to find them make copies of the email, record the meeting or otherwise preserve the evidence. Once you are over 50, its your only protection.

Last year my group had 3 people (out of 6) let go. All 3 happened to be in portfolio 1 pension. The others were not. Say what you want, but it looks extremely bad to me. Those that were let go were only about 50 - so not retirement age. They were in critical roles as well. How they were chosen is beyond me (other than to get ride of the pension payments).

3M has mastered how to effectively age discriminate against older employees. 3M has learned how to be ageist without being caught. History is a great teacher.

Ageism at 3M is real. It is illegal and 3M needs to realize employees with experience have much to offer. They can get things done efficiently. 3M needs to look at the cost of replacing an older
leader with much experience with a younger employee with no experience.

That was rude. Just because a person learned how to use a slide rule and Lotus Notes doesn't mean they haven't picked up a lot of other tools along the way.

Retire, already, and give someone else a chance to have a job.

Even if you do have decades of experience, nobody needs you slide rule and lotus notes expertise anymore.

And if you haven't adequately prepared for retirement after 46 years at the same employer -- who offered a generous pension plan to you cohort -- that's on you.

Left after 35 years and in late 50s. Reached the important 92 number in age plus work years. Glad I left because the insanity of "doing more with less" ad nauseum plus having to fire good people to "meet the numbers" for the quarter is not the company I joined in the 1980s.

Get your life back and retire. Always let the best quality people on your team know they can call you for advice or to pick your brain. I did that and it wasn't time consuming.

I know someone who stuck around for 50 years then retired. He’s now lamenting having hung around far too long. Do your best to pass your knowledge to others, then get out and enjoy. You deserve it!
