@3gtf+13vbj3Qz It is true. As I said I was laid off in September, 2016 and I am based in the US. The people selected were done at the VP level without input from lower level managers. Normally, as you said, managers/Sr. managers would put their recommendations forward for LR candidates in their groups. Sometimes they do not do it this way.

LR decision was made 6 months prior, with % target. Each director and VP were tasked to submit names. For the next 5 months after that, the names kept getting refined, then the list got frozen in the last month. It’s quite an exhaustive process during my tenure there. Not sure if it is the same now.

I was also laid off in Sept. 2016. I don't know at what level the decisions were made at, but probably between the VP and Director levels. My manager knew ahead of time because he had to approve an impacted person's PTO request knowing they'd be on PTO the day he would have to inform them of the bad news.

He sent a message to the entire team 30 min before the quarterly earning's call "highly encouraging us" to listen to the earnings call that mentioned the LR. Shortly after the earnings call ended, several of us received 1-on-1 requests for the next morning. Word spread pretty quickly among the team after hours about who was being let go. He said it was pretty tough trying not to let anything slip in the week or so that he knew. I think they had manager's training where they gave them a copy of the script they have to read from before they find out who the actual impacted employees are. Then they get the list of names and the packages, which they have to print and have ready for us for our 1-on-1 meetings.

@5cwl+13vbj3Qz It's a 70k company. Your tribe decided to do it differently.

I was laid off in Sept. 2016. My manager told me that the decisions were all made at the VP level and than managers were not solicited for input. My manager only found out the night before he informed his people, who the people were to be laid off.

@3rof+13vbj3Qz Not true in the US. Directors (with reports definitely know, not ICs though) and Sr. Managers (only ones with reports and case by case basis) know well ahead of time. They are tasked with list creation which then goes up the chain of command for discussion/approval and then finalized with HR, who is more admin at this stage. This has to be planned out well in advance as there's lots of behind the scenes action with budget.

Not true anymore. We usual hear of a number but the names are all decided by VP level. When first line managers get the names there is nothing they can do other than give the bad news. They usually find out the day before now. HR is trying to minimize anyone letting it out early because people were doing LOA"s and hardships which prevents them from getting let go.

Usually a few weeks prior. Managers get contacted by HR to go over dates, justification, things they need to do and finally a few days before the text of what they need to say.
