More layoffs coming today? 13 May 2025

....after yesterday's "rosy" All Company meeting? What kind of severance packages are they giving?

@43k same thing happen to me, then they posted a JD with a lower salary band for the role lol. Once you get put on a PIP or even intensified coaching, which is a joke, the decision has already been made.

I imagine many more layoffs are just around the corner - from Sales and Conferences to Corporate Services folk too. Nobody is safe, and yet every earnings call and ACM is nothing but sunny skies and reiterations of we are performing well in this VUCA environment.

The impacted groups always seem to be disproportionately people of colour, female, older. This, I would hazard a guess, is driven by the fact that these groups are disproportionately rated as lower performing/ underperforming etc etc. I’ve been a leader at Gartner for 10+ years and have never been asked or encouraged to validate that there is no bias in the YE process. Every year we pay lip service and the same old lame Bias slides are shared but in the back end nothing is actually checked or challenged. As such I am really uncomfortable about Year End ratings being used to identify who should go first in a lay off.

I have dusted off my resume and will be proactively seeking new employment - the sense of dread is palpable, so many people are moving out.

Company Secrecy: Keep layoff details quiet to avoid negative publicity and protect their brand image. Employee morale and trust can be significantly impacted by layoffs, and publicizing such information could worsen these effects.

Smaller Scale or Phased Layoffs: While large, company-wide layoffs tend to attract media attention, smaller, more localized or phased workforce reductions may not be considered significant enough for widespread reporting. That is why companies do it in small batches, precisely to avoid this.

Legal Considerations: Some companies may take steps to manage layoffs in ways that limit their legal obligations to publicly report certain information, such as avoiding actions that trigger the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

Internal Communication and Confidentiality: Companies might handle layoffs internally, relying on confidential communication with affected employees and keeping the information from public channels.

Having gone through this in the past year, why don't these gradual layoffs and executive changes make the news? Other consulting and advisory firms have laid off articles.

Layoffs earlier in the year, including top performers (not on plan as mentioned in other posts), are all expense-based and "leaning "(due to insufficient data) towards 50+ employees.

@43k

WOW, why do you think it is?

Sorry you had to go through this.

@3z0 I was placed on a PIP and worked overtime to hit the goals and get off of it. I succeeded only for them to EXTEND the PIP. I once again hit all the goals on the extended PIP and was excelling, only for them to still lay me off in the end. So if you’re put on a PIP, even if you pass, you’re most likely going to get let go no matter what.

Perhaps not so random? That is, "letting the 'more expensive' employees go"? a.k.a. cost cutting? a.k.a. the upcoming ratio rev vs. OPEX is not looking too good?

@3z0 it seems to all be random. I personally know three associates laid off who were Winner’s Circle achievers last year and just achieved their Q1 bonus.

@3vb

Question:

Layoffs are due to company-wide adjustments, such as restructuring or cost-cutting or overall business performance issues, while terminations are based on individual employee performance or behavior.

"Not having layoffs (due to overall business / company reasons), but people just 'don't perform'?" In line with what other posts are saying perhaps?

@3hk coaching plan out of nowhere is how it starts. Everyone who has been getting laid off recently seems to have been put on one suddenly.

@1x7 yep - from sales here, 3 time back to back Winners Circle, 3 promotions in 3 years, all of a sudden got put on "coaching plan" - only thing it's motivated me to do is look for another job, because nothing had changed about how I ran my patch. Wouldn't be surprised if they throw a PIP at me before kicking me to the curb.

It's not about quality, but margins and cost reduction.

@1kd

This is true. It happened to many people I know personally. First negative review (in careers spanning 7-15 years with the company) in 2024 > coaching plan > lay off. Also, many roles outsourced to India. This is across various departments. No one is safe. There were more lay offs on Monday the 19th.

I don't know about the conferences group, but otherwise I think anyone could be chopped as I have heard of cuts across sales, research, and consulting--regardless of how many years you've been there or your performance. This "te---r" approach also has the effect of getting people to leave on their own to new jobs so Gartner doesn't have to pay severance and actually lay them off and have to risk the press or public finding out. Really cr-ppy--but Gartner is clever....thin the ranks by letting the sheep do it themselves....

Is this mostly sales related positions, or are analysts and advisors on the chopping block too?

Someone who works there said that the head of research is gone (replaced), no public news? (a few weeks back, this year)

Posted previously (thread here right before this one):

"1) Took place two (2) days after the earnings call?

  1. In batches not to make news?
  2. Frequently announcing lower target #s to then "exceed them"?"

#1 relates to the round that took place just 2 days after they announced Q1 #s.

Yep. Plus, WARN Act (reporting needed above certain numbers), etc.

There's also another post there about "perception". Yep. Someone also said it here.

Gartner is doing it in small groups as they are trying to stay under the radar of any press. Layoffs mean a business is hurting and Gartner tries to project that they are above ever being affected by the market because they're the advisors to everyone. So they are doing in small groups at a time. Maybe 20-40 every Tuesday.

"What was the tone of the all company meeting?" The tone was 'everything is wonderful and rosy'! Don't know how many were canned today, but more than a handful.
