Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

Barnes & Noble CLOSING IMMINENT

I've heard directly from someone who works at the corporate office and they told me that the stores which have had difficulty making payroll will be on the chopping block first. If your store has had severe hours cut, you are in this category.

As of this moment, there will not be a complete company close down, but expect any sudden changes and news soon from your managers soon.

Hope you all find new jobs soon.
Good Luck.

“read the news on the resurgence of independent bookstores.“

They don’t get it !
Independents are seeing a resurgence because consumers are sick of Barnes and Noble !
So, fire more people, open smaller stores with cheaper rent and a lot less books ( basically top bestsellers in all categories, no room for back list) and customers will still stay away and order the books you don’t carry on Amazon.

Barnes & Noble
Jan 6, 2021
This store is now closed. Please visit our new location coming Feb 2021 in Downtown Westport, CT.

Read the latest news to educate yourself before posting nonsense “Fake News”. This location was closed and now is in a new smaller location..

The plan is happening.Bookstores are relevant and always will be you can also read the news on the resurgence of independent bookstores. B&N is working hard to move toward an independent model ..the plan is moving forward. Smaller stores in the right locations. Retail is changing yes B&N is changing to survive.

“ fake news ! Fake news ! It’s the Formers ! It’s not true! It’s the Formers”

Haha these people crack me up. They’re going to be out of a job and are trying to front that all is well.

Realistically B&N will be history soon and here are the main reasons why:

Not enough people are visiting and/or buying books to warrant bookstores.
Millennials and younger rarely read and buy books, if they do, they do it electronically.
Most regular customers have died off or have moved on to Amazon or other.
B&N can't compete with Amazon with prices.
B&N is not making enough money to pay the payroll and rent,
That mass layoff was an indication they cannot afford their employees, can they still support paying upper management with less and less income? Simple answer is no.

The plan is to open smaller stores. Ask your SM when your lease expires. They will evaluate profitability. They will either close permanently or close and open a smaller location if the market supports a new smaller store. Bottom line there will be less stores in the future and the current store type will no longer be around in the end. This will take years if successful..

@4jgs this is a rumor site, some rumors turn out to be true, some don’t. Take it with a grain of salt or just don’t read it at all, but it’s kinda foolish to come to a rumor site just to complain about hearing rumors.

Sad.

Save your breath, site mods nuke posts containing real names or any other personally identifiable info as this is an anonymous board. You can only name top dogs (public figures). F-words and insults are not allowed either.

But, again, this place has been insisting the demise is imminent, for three years at least.
Love it or hate it, it hasn’t happened.
I’m annoyed with the endless false rumors and fake headlines.

And yet you keep coming here.
Lots of truth has been posted here.

Austin, I wish I was a corporate stooge, but in reality, I’m way down on the totem pole.

Don’t need to share my name nor put my job in jeapordy, either.

You can be an Essential employee or an expendable employee. It’s your choice.

I’ll stick with AMAZON. They need workers in their warehouses to fulfill orders. Had to hire many to keep up with online shoppers. It’s the 21st Century people. Look at your empty malls and Main Streets. Retail careers are over. Warehouses, fast food, supermarkets and gas stations are where the jobs are.

Best Buy sales were huge during the pandemic. Couldn’t keep laptops & tablets in stock, they were selling so fast for online learning. Lots of others were working jobs from home .They “furloughed” some employees, just keeping the inventory staff and a couple to run curbside pickup. Those furloughed got unemployment while Best Buy got lots of sales with minimal staffing. Encouraged by this they let go the full timers and lots of part timers . It’s the retail way of the world now. If you choose to work in a retail environment you’re extremely expendable. If a company can make as much money without you they will.

Nice try ,Corporate stooge. Booksellers aren’t as mindless and empty headed as you think. There’s more truth on here than in any managers meeting. You lie so much and so long I think you actually believe your lies.
My name is Austin I dare you to tell me yours !
Yeah, didn’t think so !

I'm lucky, I recently left. Will never work for retail or a big corporation again. They're too evil and treat everyone like shlt. I've known this about B&N for years but I stuck around for my own reasons until I just couldn't stand it anymore. I would hope to think most employees know that it'll be over any day now, they're not stupid.

I saw that.

Unlike, B&N, Best Buy has surging sales due to the pandemic, and did well
upon reopening.

I'm not sure why they are cutting staff amidst the great sales increase.
Makes zero sense, unless they made most of their gains online instead of instore.

But the employees were blindsided, no warning.

Great Christmas numbers guys, now GET OUT!

Did you guys see what happened to the full timers at Best Buy, right before Valentine's day?

Talk about heartless.

They booted top sellers, folks that had been dedicated to the company for over
ten years: Goodbye!

I guess this is the new normal, and none of these companies care.

B&N, as sad as it's become, is doing what they all are doing.

TO: Stuff has been posted here for three years now, that has never happened.

Why are you MANAGERS so concerned about this page? I'll tell you, because this place isn't like the sneaky, back-stabbing mgt and corp, office- the truth is posted here!

And why can't any of you COWARDS sign your names here? You don't want your employees to be worried and yet you can't even back up your stories by putting your name on your "truth?" LOL
You can't even tell your employees just how bad sales really are! Newsflash, not all of your employees are stupid and keep their heads in the sand.

B&N rules for employees: Keep your mouth shut, listen only to us, do what we say and be a good slave.

If most of the employees weren't as cowardly as you managers are on this page, B&N would have had a union back in the '70s!

Why is it then when I call stores and ask BN employees in person about their closing, they always have a hurt and dejected look on their face? They are not stupid and can see the writing on the wall just like the past employees can. Oh, and down with BN, Daunt, Riggio.

Sure, it will eventually happen (a broken clock is correct twice a day, etc.),
but there is never any legit info on here, just "i know a guy in corporate,"
or "I'm a store manager and..."

You guys fall for this EVERY TIME.

My manager told us to stop reading this site years ago but I didn't listen, and then I learned about the huge layoff- a whole week before it actually happened because I saw it on here.
So I guess if you believe your manager, there's no need for you to come back to this page.
Go on back to being a good little B&N zombie, buh bye now!

Please forgive me if I think your manager is lying to you. But feel free to believe him. Because he has your best interest at heart. Right ?

To: My manager said none of this is true.
I outright asked my mgr. “ is my position being eliminated ?”
Was told “ no that’s not true “
Less than a month later, I’m fired.
2 other Mgrs told me they knew for 2 months !
Still believe your manager who says “ none of this is true” ?
It’s your paycheck .

I'm glad I know now, I'd hate to find out by reading stupid Facebook. I am one of the luckier ones. have a job waiting for me but I want to stay and help close just for sentimental reasons. But it's still not the same the same here, I cursed the company when they laid off my co-workers and very good friends who were great at their jobs, so this is bittersweet.

To tell the truth, I knew we were in trouble when the Nook failed badly. So many bad corporate decisions, bad managers combined with an electronic present, it was only a matter of time.

I hope everyone gets through this ok.
