Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Buckle up

Funny how so many of you are confident that you're safe because things are going great. When the recession fully hits, 90 percent of you will be caught with your pants down. You need to realize we're not immune to the recession! Once it hits, it'll hit hard and nobody will be safe. But go ahead, keep your heads stuck in the sand and ignore what's coming. You're only going to hurt yourselves that way.

We need to push these millennials out. We are the future and the millennials are preventing us from being able to advance. I’m looking at places like Amazon, Meta, and Snowflake where they don’t have 40 yo millennials blocking a promotion for someone like me for the next 15 years. The millennials tell me to do my time and I can be like them. I don’t want to be like them.

I hate how the US government caused inflation in the UK and Australia. It’s totally not a global phenomena.

@3lej Are you in the US?

There is no recession taking place in the US at the moment, although it’s clear that bosses would very much like for one to happen.

The people perversely pining for a recession should keep in mind that it won’t do much to bring down wages or reduce worker leverage.

What specific government policies are driving inflation? Last time I checked, the major cause of inflation (besides the war in Ukraine) was the mismanagement of globally distributed corporate supply chains. The US government can’t do much to stop companies from shutting down factories in China due to Covid-19 rules.

Don’t forget the money printing. It all boils down to the money printing.

The recession will indeed hit harder and get worse before it gets better. And ExxonMobil employees like everyone else will be negatively affected. But we will get through it. It just isn't going to be pretty for a while and a lot of the public are going to suffer more. But make no mistake, the inflation we are dealing with is very much because of poor government policy. Greed is a human nature thing and it is not any larger than usual now. But recent very poor government policy - excessive covid lockdowns, excessive government spending, poor vaccine mandate policy etc. all negatively impacted the supply demand balance and that really helped delivered inflation like we haven't seen since the 70's. The slow response from the Fed - being in denial for so long and not getting out in front of this with interest rates also has not helped. They are now playing catch up and that's going to be ugly for interest rate. Never underestimate the ability of poor government to make your life miserable!

@OP The recession is an elite talking point. It isn’t something you need to worry about unless you happen to hold billions of dollars in tech stocks, or receive the majority of your compensation in company stock. My guess is that neither is true for you.

Inflation is a real problem, but that has more to do with corporate greed and mismanagement than it does with government policy. Exxon is a good example of process gouging for its own sake.

One paycheck at a time baby, one paycheck at a time. When the money dries up I will go somewhere else to collect another paycheck doing the bare minimum.

Do people really think they are immune to a recession? I don’t. If I even got a raise when EM made billions, it was never very good. I fully expect a recession to hit me hard (which may include losing my job).

Well, if the pants are down, it’s easy to just bend over and grab your ankles.
