Article - What happens when colleagues know each other’s salaries

https://dnyuz.com/2022/01/31/what-happens-when-colleagues-know-each-others-salaries/

"A new study supports this argument with data.

Tomasz Obloj of HEC Paris and Todd Zenger from the University of Utah’s business school compiled the salaries of almost 100,000 US-based academics in eight states over a period of 14 years. Their findings, set to be published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour later this year, show that pay transparency (which schools in some states practice as a matter of course) had a big effect on both pay equity—how fairly the academics were paid, particularly in regards to gender—and on pay equality—how similarly the academics were paid compared with their peers.

Not surprisingly, once wages and rewards become transparent, there is both internal and external pressure to close those gaps, Obloj observed."

Talking about DEI meanwhile go about exploiting H1B folks by underpaying them because they it’s not as easy as pack your bags and go

All of us are underpaid thanks to David Reeder and old buddies, GloFo stock-holders beware of the Lexmark class action !
Sick & tired for their kind of DEI preaching (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion).

@3ocl biggest travesty I see is the SMTS making $90k/yr. Underpaid by at least $30k. Lots of MTS at $90k too that should be making $10k-20k more. These people have to also pay into SSI and Medicare with no guarantee they'll ever reap those benefits.

H1Bdata salaries are so low! It's literally the floor in some cases! This is how they take advantage of immigrants

@2zst I don't recall seeing salary in any job listings, was it just for specific ones?

We compared, and discovered that PhD doesn't pay. People with Bachelor's are being told their lack of an advanced degree contributes to their lower position on a band. It's a lie. They lowball literally everyone, when engineers think "band" they imagine a Gaussian curve. It's a lie, the pay curve is heavily skewed towards the lower end. They use it to show you "there is room for growth", to demean you. A lot of people know the official salary bands because targeted jobs postings (as a part of someone's greencard application) must include salary range. I used to hawk Taleo trying to get my friends in (in good, pre-B*nyon times) and noticed pretty wild bands. So word got around, people looked up their job titles and many confronted their managers about being on the lowest end of the band. Lack of an advanced degrees

  • Got a 7% adjustment in Nov. -AIP is funded at 120% = 6% of my 2021 Salary,
  • QPB Q4 is funded at 120% = 6% of my Q4 salary.
  • $2k Wafer Shipment Bonus-- 50 Shares of free stock

I could make more with another company, but I'm able to put $1500 a month into my 401K, getting between $14k-$16k bonuses for 2021and with relatively no stress at that work place. Life is good.

Always avoid taking advice from manager or colleague on taking offer outside the company.

Please check with your friends or neighbors or online portal like blind or this website or glassdoor

@1ifq+1f4cI82D non-semi company in TX. I have family, but not an issue. Company is known for generous comp, but high turnover/quick burnout

@ 1dkr

If you live in NY, and had an opportunity to move to a guaranteed lower cost of living state, with a 20% raise, and don’t need to worry about family, you need to stop taking advice from your friend. My guess is you were offered in Phoenix or Albuquerque.

@1bjj this is actually one thing I miss about being a manager. I forget the name of the tool, but assume they're using the same thing as 5 years ago that tells you employee tier, and suggested raise and bonus ranges? if so, is it only the merit that's pitiful or are the "120% funded" bonuses also bad?

I turned down an offer for a job located in a large southwestern city, and was discussing it with a trusted coworker. The offer seemed good to me, but he balked and said it was low. Felt tempted to ask how much he makes at GF because it would have been almost a 25% jump for me, but figured it was due to HCOL

@1stq --Except here. They have no problem letting you go to another company over a 1$/hr increase. I've seen it way too many times.
I truely believe they want less people for the overhead at this point.
News flash the 2021 focal compensation tool unlocked on the 30th. And to no ones surprise: It is only a little better than last year. Don't blame your manager on the raise. He or she only has a limited amount to allocate.

@xrg+1f4cI82D wtf was that even supposed to mean lmao. Brah. When employees discuss pay it results in increased pay for all. Every study that isn't paid off by some research firm supports it. Discuss your pay because nobody else will.

transparency will lead to more competition and bell curve appraisal made thing more competitive.

If four employees report to one manager does work well still company want manager to pay not same for all.

Company want one employee to get more pay do that employee will be competitive to earn high pay
