Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Is IBM still a shithole?

They’re asking me to join their alumni network. Why would I join the alumni network of this cr----r?

"Is IBM still a shithole?"... yes, absolutely. STAY AWAY!

@3fpk, someone from HR contacted me on LinkedIn and invited me to join. Here's the link:

https://alumni.ibm.com/

The IBM shithole laid me off a few years back because I'm (you guessed it) too old, mid-50s at the time. I certainly don't lack any skills IBM claims are important to them. And all good annual evaluations, etc. Same story as so many others. In any event, I let this person know what I thought of them contacting me. But check out the link if you'd like. YMMV

I think it's another bs ibm ploy to reach out to people who left them and see if they want to come back.
Let me guess, an ibm recruiter sent you that?

It's still a shithole, no one in tech considers it any good. Even in consulting it is 3rd tier after witch companies.

Overall, yes. However, there are some amazing managers that shield their teams from all the bs. It’s rare, but there are a few leaders willing to dissent from the horrible direction ibm is headed. Unicorns.

What do you mean by alumni network? Is this a FB or Linkedin group or something like that?

I'm a former IBMer, but never heard of such a thing.

@1ato "If you can't do, consult"
Said literally no one ever other than you. You're probably a PM or in HR or something.

As someone also in my late 30s who left IBM during Covid, I can only conclude that you a must be a complete id--t for being such a fan of an objectively horrible company who treats their employees like dirt and is the laughingstock of both the tech and consulting industries.

For clarity, and to dispel any myths…I’m in my late 30s and have spent almost 10 years in IBM.

I saw how sh*t it was under Ginni and Bridget. I saw how good it could become under Mark. I’m not a big John fan, but at the end of the day, I’m doing good work, with good people, and have a good career path lined out.

So no, I’m not in my 20s in my
first job, I did 10 years at competitors before coming to IBM, and no I’m not a bully (although the person that wrote that referred to software developers so clearly doesn’t know the consulting business anyway 😂). Sorry to not be the echo in your negative echo chamber!

Retired IBMer since 2019 here. The way OP put this question gives me the creep. I agree with much of the IBM shortfalls highlighted in these discussions. However, it does not help much to use profane language and the like. Others may disagree with me, but I simply don't like to engage in debates such as this particular one.

IBM is not a s h i t h...but simply a big corporation with its own rules and dynamics.
Is it a perfect company? No but gives you the opportunities to grow and spend time in skills investments and if you are smart enough to understand the "rules", and to know how to deal with people and management, you can make a decent career. A career that is fully up to the employee to build. Then if you blame and complain every time about everything you cannot pretend to get respect and career opportunities. And if you don't like the way it works nobody stops you to look for something different outside.

To the 1 year employee with Bullet points. How the he-l did you get hired? You really think you can expense home internet? What planet are you on? About the phone…it depends on job role, not everyone just gets a phone. I have an ibm phone and it’s completely 100% taken care of, everything you said is BS and you sound like a fool of an employee anyway.

Agree with @1ato. How can a consulting firm be impartial to technology vendors if they are attached to one of them?

If you can't do, Consult.

IBM needs to get out of the Consulting business.

The person who said IBM Consulting, is great is probably in his early 20’s.
I work in IBM Consulting, and they are firing all employees that are over 50. 😟

@iyb, the two questions are unrelated. The fact that you think the answer to one determines the answer to the other makes you a mo-ron. LOL

I work too in the US IBM Consulting, and it is pretty miserable right now.
Everybody is waiting to see what will happen. Pretty stressful I must say. There is some work but definitely not a ton of work. Hoping for the best but getting ready for the worst.

Someone said "Nope. It's pretty good for the most part (Consulting Americas here)."

As someone who works in the Consulting Americas division as well, I couldn't disagree more. Software developers are straight up refusing to work with one another. The person who wrote that is probably a bully who pretends to be oblivious to the fact that virtually everyone hates him/her.

I've been here for about 1 year. During that time I have been...

  • Intentionally deceived about holiday bonuses
  • Insulted publicly during Christmas for asking about holiday bonuses
  • A witness to dozens of disgruntled engineers exiting the company in anger, several of whom went out of their way to tell newer staff members about their grievances
  • Forced to work without billing (which makes it look like I'm not working at all, and makes it look like my boss is a genius)
  • The reason a sh---y boss got demoted (company didn't care about the victims though)
  • Lied to about being able to expense bills such as phone and internet
  • Told that unbilled solo work is the same thing as shadowing
  • Flat out ignored by HR despite multiple attempts to air my grievances to them

And that's just off the top of my head. I could go on, but I won't for the sake of my own mental health.

So in conclusion, yes, IBM is a shithole.
