Thread regarding Baker Hughes layoffs

Real vacation is only when you get out of here

The only real vacation would be to get out of here. It has become very exhausting to work here.

When I took a vacation, it wasn’t really a vacation at all because I had a bunch of work to finish before I left, and all the time I was thinking about the bunch of work waiting for me when I get back.

Those few days of vacation were more exhausting than anything.

All permissive leave means, is that the individual that the manager is screwing, can have all the time off they want, while those actually working, get the "look" when seeking approval for leave, or possibly laid off, so they don't have to pay you for what you have rightfully earned. Take it all early in the year, and as often as they approve it. They will never deny it when it is really needed, since we are all Liberals now. You are working and paying taxes. Might as well get some of the free stuff that gets poured out to those who won't work, or pay taxes.

Regarding Post ID: @3ezx+1am9O8LC....in regards to your comment that "to the person who says in the company of 60,000 people surely...yada, yada, yada", I made that post, and yes, I am totally aware of the kind of work that OFS, including Baker Hughes is engaged in. You obviously don't get irony or sarcasm. Still need to have people who can backfill, etc. If you are saying that this truly doesn't exist anymore in Baker Hughes, which by my irony and sarcasm, I'm readily admitting also, then the company is fastly approaching "toes up" status.

I agree with OP and some others the vacation culture is weak here at the new BKR. To the person who says in the company of 60,000 people surely there are people who can backfill your role, they don't understand either 1) any excess was trimmed long ago from this company or 2) what it means to be in an OFS company its a 24/7 enterprise with extremely short engineering timetables and very generous budgets.

The UK is on vacation every other week. They have two people for each job. It’s a joke. One thing about PTO you don’t have to give notice to quit.

@1psk the real issue is not that "your job isn't that important anyway."

It's the constant fear that you can be easily replaced by some slum lord millionaire willing to work harder for significantly less compensation. That's the real motivation, keeping us running on the proverbial hamster wheel until either quitting on our own, or the employer quitting us!

The name of the game is ROI.....not how hard you "work" during your PTO, vacation, time off, etc.

My takeaway & advice from working @ BKR:

Work like a dawg and they will treat you like a dawg.

Push back and they will push the work off on someone else that will work like a dawg!

RE: Vacation

There is no such thing at BH. They have something called “permissive time off” or PTO. In theory, there is no limit to the number of days off a person can take. In practice, it tricks people into taking less time off, and when you request more than a week the manager/people-leader/whatever throws a tantrum over granting the request.

Lesson learned: never take a job with a company that doesn’t offer a specific number of guaranteed vacation and sick days.

@1psk If you want to work during your days off that’s your problem. Remember that it counts for nothing and BH will lay you off as fast as anyone else.

The company should have enough knowledgeable people who can backfill for someone when they are on vacation...C'mon man! What if I take a vacation to Australia or New Zealand? You think I'm gonna call in or check emails? Ha Ha

The fact that you took days off and didn’t work/get on calls tells me you don’t actually work for BH or your job isn’t that important anyway. I don’t know a single person at BH that takes actual vacation. Every one of us still do emails and calls while we’re gone.
