Thread regarding 3M layoffs

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH HR DURING THE LAYOFFS?

I’ve had a few people I know get laid off in the last several months and they all have similar stories about how uncaring or unresponsive HR has been during and after severance meetings. Would be interested to hear other experiences.

You say 3M took your retirement and pension? I feel really bad about what you're going through, but, unless you're not vested (be it pension 1 or 2) or have loans against your 401K that need to be paid back earlier than you expected, these funds are yours when you retire. Am I missing something? Keep your chin up... good things come to good people.

I do hope that hr is reading the comments on this site. Its not like they don’t know how bad their department is. But they need to know that no one is buying their absolute nonsense.

You can’t stop references. Why would management not want references to be given.

If providing references is not allowed or results in punitive action , my first thought goes to a violation of the 1st Ammendment to the United States Constitution for U.S. citizens. Any legal insight??

I’m so sorry to hear about your personal situation, it makes me incredibly disappointed in the our leadership and the support functions that enable this type of behavior and environment.

Does your documentation really state that you may not ask for professional references from 3M? My severance paperwork had no such language, but interestingly I’ve had co-workers tell me that they’re hesitant to give references because they fear they’ll be reprimanded. Others are are totally comfortable doing so.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

It’s so sad to see this basic practice that 3M bullies the employees who are forced to leave to sign documents to collect severance and the ones who are left with an unspoken word not to offer references where in they impact their future livelihood, let me tell you this is truly gross and unethical and there a huge number who are impacted by this act. Unfortunately no one can take them to task. The big corporate swats small employee life flies !

Not only did 3M take me and my family’s livelihood, retirement, and pension, they will not allow my colleagues to provide me with a reference for a new job because I took a severance package and signed the paperwork.

I’m 53 years old with 2 daughters in college.

In my job search, I’m finding 3M is not good to have on your résumé.

HR has been worthless for ten years now. If we think of them like Plant Maintenance managers in a factory, it resets our expectations. They have a cold hard approach to keeping “us” running. We’re part of the machine - not human beings. You’re better off calling one of the HR helplines - at least they have service metrics.

In January 2021 it was the same. At that time not as much support on LinkedIn etc from colleagues even. Now I feel those let go are being kinder.

HR didn’t talk with us at all. Just “management”. Quite cold and usual words.

3M has never had enough HR people. They have always been stretched too thin. No wonder they can’t provide the necessary support.

I had questions but our HR contact was on vacation right after we were informed of our roles being eliminated and provided no resource as a back up during that time…questions went unanswered - basically just redirected to the poorly organized paperwork which created more questions than answers…

My experience is that my leadership went cold, HR is colder. But nothing beats all the new best friend support on LinkedIn from people who never cared before now. Suddenly we’re all besties? Shove it, ya insincere tools

I had a coworker who was let go. HR informed him that his job was being eliminated.
Employee: "When will my last day of work be?
HR: "I'm not sure, but probably next Friday. I'll let you know if that changes."
On the next Friday the employees packed up his personal items and went to the front office to turn in his badge and laptop.
HR: "Your last day isn't until Tuesday."
Employee: "You said Friday, as in today, and you never notified me that it changed."
HR: "Well, that's on YOU. You should have followed up. Your manager wants to meet with you when he gets back on Monday to reassign your work to other people."
The employee just laughed and said "My retirement party starts in 20 minutes. I'm not coming back for 2 more days." Then he walked out the door.

They’re unknowledgeable, and afraid they’re next. No help at all. Mine looked scared said she was surprised at how well I took it.

HR works for 3M and does not care about employees. 3M has a Code of Conduct but HR does not do anything to enforce it.

I was 6 months from retirement and exited. Asked if there was anyway to bridge to retirement so I could get my full benefits. HR never responded

A bunch of us in Ent Ops were laid off together in one meeting. Hr told some of us with specific compensation questions like RSUs that we could not answer them bc other people in the room were in lower job grades. Was told we had to schedule a follow up meeting ourselves. Tried to get answers in email and no response.
