For a company that loves to spam its employees with endless communications, they’ve been radio silent lately. Half or more of GM hires need to be RIF’ed.
Does anyone have advice for how to volunteer for layoffs? I want to leave anyway at this point so may as well get a severance if I can and maybe save someone else's job if it does.
Regarding MIP, I have a previous colleague who was impacted by the RIF over a month ago. He got the 60 day WARN, 2 weeks pay for every year he was employed, and also is getting his MIP for FY23.
If they really are going to do a RIF in the thousands I would expect that entire programs will be cut rather than them focusing on picking out the low performers in each group. The former approach is the only way to get any real cost savings out of a mass layoff. When I’ve seen that approach used before at MDT the group managers and director learned the afternoon before (their roles were also cut) and then they and 25 ICs got a meeting invite for early the next morning during which they were all officially notified.
A friend in a relevant role confirmed to me that April 17 will have a lot of action. They aren’t sure of the numbers company wide, but said it could be similar to Target after the Target Canada debacle where they brought in auditoriums of people at once to let go.
No, if you are on WARN this FY you will get this year's MIP but not next year. You have to be employed up until the last day of the FY. If you are let go now you won't be employed the end of the next FY and no MIP
Thanks for the insight! I didn't see the caveat about restructuring so I see how that might include layoffs. I don't believe the WARN act part covers "last working day" but the other language might cover it. In that case, does that mean anyone laid off will also get 2 months prorated into next FYb as well (due to WARN)?
@3pud+1lXQOKGa yes this is correct. you remain an employee but dont need to come in. it says so in the termination letter specifically.
“If your employment ends due to restructuring, retirement, disability or death, the award is prorated based on the effective date of your employment termination” - from the MIP brochure on AskHR. I read this as if you are laid off due to restructuring, you get prorated MIP.
@3eny+1lXQOKGa I think the deal is with the layoff you get a WARN period of 60 days. Supposedly you are still a full employee until the 60 days are up, so still eligible for MIP. On the books you are still working/getting paid but don't have to actually work.

I always wondered why people got the 60 days. Finally realized last month it's so they don't give away the layoff plan until it's done.
@3dnb The fake news is that everyone still gets MIP based on timing. That is false. The policy as of two days ago and apparently updated for 2023 is that your last "working day" must be no sooner than the last day of the fiscal year. So, layoffs before April 28th means no MIP is how I read it. I keep hearing people say anyone affected by layoffs will get MIP but that's not what the policy states. go ahead and look it up on Ask HR and read for yourselves if you need to make plans.
Our projects are on cutting edge technology. The leader of our department a few weeks ago said that he thought impacts would be minimal. But, in a department meeting this week, although staying positive about the future, he was very careful to avoid saying there would be no layoffs. Ugh. Reading between the lines, we are not going to be as lucky as he had hoped.

everyone needs to be patient - mdt is a big company, these are big decisions, and things take time. you still get MIP with this timing, some are sharing fake news here. just let things play out. they've been transparent that it's coming, just wait and see what happens.
Re MIP - if April 17th is the date, you are technically still an employee for the next 60 days so you will be on the books at end of FY and fully qualify for MIP. if youre retirement eliglble you can retire at the end of the 60 days so you dont lose your health insurance for example.

Why does anyone think MIP will be paid out? The policy states no MIP if your last working day it prior to the last day of the fiscal year April 28. It was recently updated. I don't know if that language was changed however.
MIP still gets paid out to the laid off folks. And recognize points dont go away if you get laid off either.

It’s sad for the people who put in almost a full fiscal year of work then get let go less than 2 weeks before year end close… getting robbed their MIP (whatever we may receive). Cruel to milk them to the very last moments and pull the rug out from under. Remember to cash in your Recognize if you have any before 4/17 if in GO&SC.
April 17th makes sense. It is a 60 day WARN which makes it a Friday (payday) on the 60th day if they notify on a Monday. They do try to line up your last paycheck with a MDT payday, from personal experience with MDT layoffs.
I heard the same most likely a big Zoom meeting week of the 17th, better then the Easter week. IMHO
If you can definitely use that PTO if possible. I got fired 14 FEB and I believe they paid for my unused PTO I was definitely trying to use. I thank God for the opportunity to work there for 8 plus years. I'm not stressed anymore. I loved what I did, work was good just the leadership & the processes were so out of touch. Now forcing employees to be in office all the time now no hybrid? Sheesh. I didn't know about this website until after I got fired. What an eye opener to see what people are really going through.

@prp+1lXQOKGa; thats when CVG is probably doing their big set. I've heard #s in the 10-15K across the full company so ~15% or so. The reason they are doing it later is trying to squeeze out this quarter/FY because Geoff's job is on the line if he doesn't show improvement. If improvement isn't shown, at least he can say look at the major layoff we are doing which will help to try and save his job. He is sacrificing his workforce and any semblance of future innovation to save his paycheck; far cry from the MDT mission.

No idea on the size but I’m guessing pretty large for them to drag this out so long. Personally the 17th can’t come fast enough, I’ll take any form of resolution at this point, good or bad. For a company that cares so much about the health of their employees I’m sure they’ve cut a few years off of many of our coworkers lives with this amount of stress.
