Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

Heads Up

Heads up. All management was out on notice 2 weeks ago.

State Farm has essentially initiated the FANG metric systems for divisions and employees. (This is coming to other Fortune 500 companies too, so you really can’t run from this new corporate model).

How FANG metrics work:

  1. You must be a high performer at ALL times.
  1. The concept in procedure work 2x is better than average performance.
  1. Innovative/software 10x is better than average.
  1. Focus on team vs individual.
  1. Hard work does not equal reward. Outcome and high performance only count.

You can go look at the pitch decks for these companies to show you the company values.

———

Now how this works at non-fang companies

  1. Unlike fang employees, State Farm and other non fang company employees will have high pressure ALL the time.

*But you do not receive the rewards of FANG companies in San Jose. (Notice even if fang employees relocate outside of San Jose or nyc their salary drops, but the metrics you are evaluated in are still the same.)

  1. The evaluations start first with tenured employees. If you are tenured you should know your job. If you are average or low then you need to change or you are fired.
  1. Then comes the person not tenured to be squeezed second.
  1. New employees have a short time to grasp new concepts and either become top performers or get fired.

The average time is 3-5 years at a FANG company.

I can share I am upper management at State Farm. Relatives are directors at other major 500 non tech companies and they are implementing FANG metrics in the next 6 months.

All insurance companies are moving to this model.

It use to be LEAN, but since FANG cold get so much out of their employees other corporations have decided to implement this method.

My personal thought is people who willingly choose a FANG company know the pressure going in. They are rewarded financially and you can write your own ticket when you leave. I have no idea how a 45k salaried business analyst with 7 years experience is going to find anything appealing about this structure.

Oh and this IS implemented universally in a company in ALL employee roles.

A heads up bc it’s coming to Allstate, Usaa and nationwide ASAP. My friends are mangers there. One worked for a FANG and recognized it right away. So did two State Farm people whose spouse worked at fang companies.

@1ebi…..sure. Because guys like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs were all small thinkers with no vision or business sense whatsoever.
You don’t have to like it, but stop the charade of your superior business sense. You don’t have any.

Anyone impressed with the FAANG model or does not understand the dark organizations involved is not a leader not a big picture employee and should not be making decisions for companies

Big consulting firms are also bad news

Research and connections matter

They can have their FAANG or whatever they want......I really don't GAF! They're all clicky greedy corrupt politicians. All they care about is their click and that you follow their elitist narrative. Anything outside of that is garbage and is to be disposed of.

The misspelling of Faang was probably autocorrect. I work in a different field and this nonsense is there too. Unless you stand to make really good money like you do at the really FAANG companies, you need to resist. You'll just get burnt out with nothing to show. This type of thinking leads to cutting corners, lying, throwing coworkers under the bus and all manner of negativity. Resist!

Maybe true.. Maybe not. This board is full of seemingly exaggerated policies or complaints. Example “My boss actually wanted me to work today? How offensive right?” Example 2 “I can’t believe I took a call center job and there are metrics to meet.” Example 3 “ I was evaluated by the policies outlined in detail during my training. Wow. Can you believe that gross incompetence?”

Night school must = knowledge

Originally coined by Jim Cramer of MSNBC, FANG is a group of high performing technology stocks that includes Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google (Alphabet). Investors then added Apple into the list to form the acronym FAANG.

You miss-spelled FAANG (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google) a 10 year old acronym. When your manager said bring your learning from night school back to work and share with the team. This is not what they meant.

The great thing about Fang companies, is they have top pay and have to compete for talent. I look forward to my pay going up, the claims pay is average at best at SF . I’m a top performer, I should be paid like one .

Your manager does not hire anyone. All staffing decisions are made 3 levels up the food chain.

Yep. When your manager tells you they are hiring to an appropriate level to meet SLOs, they are lying. You maybe get 5 or 6 new people but do the math… over 100k of claims out of SLO and adding a hand full of people? No. That’s not how it works lol. Tbh it’s not going to work anyway and they will revert but the horrible environment at SF is here for at least another year.
FANG works for some fields but claims isn’t one. You need some tenured people to properly process these claims and nobody is going to stay in that type on environment.
