Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Happy birthday/New Year to me

I turned 50 yesterday. My birthday and New Year present is a job market that looks at anybody with a 5 or a 6 at the start of their age as somehow defective. My experience and knowledge suddenly matter less. I feel depressed because I know that my chances of getting a new job outside of EM that's not a major downgrade became practically unachievable.

Agree. And now I know what my parents were talking about years ago when they said make hay while the sun shines.

@2toy+1kutWA6U troll, NRE status is a real thing. You can be PIPed but it’s called something else, and can usually only be fired “for cause”

Plenty of available jobs outside of EM. I early retired at 55, took a few months off and had offers before really searching. LI Cube pic for the win!

To the poster who said you are safe from PIP at age 52, you are very wrong.

At 50, I will be celebrating that I am a stones-throw from early retirement, trueing up my assets, and dusting off my resume to get myself a just-for-me job. OP, you are in a good place. Hang in a little longer.

If you can guess the next sale, ask for a transfer. You might get offered a retirement package at 52.

@1qeb+1kutWA6U at 52 you’re protected from PIP, so basically you just need to show up and not commit any fireable offenses like dr-g/alcohol on the job. Still have to drag on until 55 and you’ll likely be coached to retire right at that mark

If you leave with PIP at 52 as NRE, do you get same benefits as at 55 retirement or some percentage?

I pray you have the fortitude (and assessment) to hold out another 2 years to get to NRE, assuming you’re from the US

There is not an automatic wall at 50, at least in most fields.
Over 55, there is hesitation in professional/technical and a wall by 60.

Of course, if you have been in any EM 'managerial' position for more than a couple years, then your future chances in your original field is pretty much zero.

Words get around.

Are you one of my former supervisors?

At any rate, I am over 50 and left EM to pursue other interests. I am so much happier now.

Since leaving, I had several job offers after revamping my resume. Took a couple of courses to brush up my skills. Consulting was always a possibility since I had a good network outside of EM. Life is not about titles, position, and money. At this point, work is all about the fun. Life is good outside of EM.

I hope this is a troll poking fun of older works. Otherwise you need to get a grip. There are lots of opportunities for people with skills regardless of age. Just look at how many retirees pick up second careers and even better their financial positions.

Hey boomer, quit your belly aching. Go buy a condo in Florida, bide your time enjoying the warm weather and leave the rest to us. It's a new world.
