Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Northeast Regional Call

Raghu said we are at 60% of office capacity and we need to increase that because we didn't spend money for all of these offices to be empty. (sounds like forcing to come in to the office soon to justify expenses)

EUC and other products were brought up as they weren't mentioned in Hocks blog. Raghu said Hock mentioned Tanzu because of rumors of it being sold off. (yet other rumors of other products being sold off has been widely spread yet he only addressed Tanzu. Food for thought)

Fake Tan: Hey, magoo, I’m going to create a fake report that shows people want to go back to the office. You need to show this down everyone’s throat.

Magoo: Yes sir! Anything else?

Fake Tan: No, that is probably all you can handle. When the real men take over we will clean it all up. Sit… Paw… good dog. Here is a CIC flavored treat.

This gets funnier. http://news.vmware.com/stories/distributed-work-dilemma dated Nov 29

2/3 of survey respondents believe their organization is more innovative if employees are in the office.

Survey conducted on behalf of VMware.
This is priceless.

"Think 50-70’s style management."

Yeah, the 1850's.

@2mxy+1jZX5OrW Most of the facilities are Class B/C office space with cinder block walls and sh-g carpeting. It’s cheap real estate. Yeah he’s cheap, but he doesn’t trust remote work. Think 50-70’s style management. This, even though teams worked somewhat remote thru Covid and delivered record profits…

Work from home, is one of the best ways to reduce operating costs associated with office space. Why is that excluded from his list of levers to pull?

See chapter 1, section 5, paragraph 13 of the 1987 play book.

Can anyone post a picture that shows any office at 60% capacity? I think they are too embarrassed to admit it is 1% at best - at least in the US.

Only reason I can think of, is communist style tracking and control.

Translation:

I don't have enough information to make a reasonable conclusion, so
I'm going to spout conspiracies.

A few reasons:

Taxes based on building occupancy.

Inducing people who don't want to work in a covid swamp to leave.

Determining if the employees on the books are actually in the country they claim.
(stories of people who have returned to India, but still getting US pay)

Capricious rules to show who is boss

Security models

we didn't spend money for all of these offices to be empty.

Hold on there, buckaragoo.
You and facilities decided to remodel the buildings right after you remodeled the buildings. No one wanted or liked the first building remodel, and the second remodel is worse than the first. Cramming 25-30% more people in a building for 'reasons' didn't make anyone smile. I notice the C-level folks didn't get any remodeling, and open space sharing. Weird... almost as if it's a cynical ploy to reduce out of control costs.

Bad planning and resource allocation on your part doesn't mean that we want to come back to an office that still keeps getting company-wide covid notices. Free-range seating is horrible for productivity.

Sounds like Magoo is being ordered by Hock to force people back to the office before the acquisition; that way, Hock doesn't look like as much of the bad guy post-acquisition when he does it. Sad! It's simply amazing to me how much influence Hock has over this company, before even 1 dollar has been exchanged in the transaction. There is still a real, but however small chance this deal gets ki---d by regulators. If Magoo was a real leader, he would tell Magoo to F off, until he actually owns the company.

What's amazing to me is that Hock's whole MO is that he is frugal and is always looking for ways to reduce costs. 2 of the largest costs he has are - 1 employees, and 2 office space. Work from home, is one of the best ways to reduce operating costs associated with office space. Why is that excluded from his list of levers to pull? Only reason I can think of, is communist style tracking and control.

How does being in the office work for sales people? Are the exempt?

Won't Broadcom keep EUC? Will they sell EUC? What does being standalone mean? How would that work?

how about all EUC people?

For all who have no clue what they are saying here. EUC will be a standalone business post acquisition and will not be dependent on core.

This is Just Raghu misdirection - does he think we care what he and Zane spent on office space when we may not have jobs in a few months?

EUC won’t be the only one. Get ready for a first round of layoffs, selloffs, and and then a second round, a third round and so on until all that is left is a pure revenue generating machine.

Why didn't Raghu say anything about EUC getting sold or kept by Broadcom? Looks like EUC will be sold out. The rumors seem to be true.

This is called the "sunk cost fallacy". In other words "I spent money on buying this, so I have to keep money maintaining it."

It's a fallacy because that money is already spent. It has no bearing on if additional money should be spent.

In other words, Magoo's reasoning is flawed, and any fresher who completed logic 101 would know that.

It makes MUCH more sense to simply state that the money spent on offices was a perfectly reasonable thing at the time, but now that things have changed, VMware is changing too. It's not a mistake, it's being flexible in the face of changed market conditions.

Grown up companies that have real leaders are able to adapt to these kinds of global changes. Mr Magoo, who was told to shut up and parrot what he is told, is not that kind of leader.

Never was.
