Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM Cadillac F1 team cost is the reason for the recent 1000 layoffs?

"GM and TWG will pay an anti-dilution fee of $450m (£358m) to secure the entry."

The dollar cost to start and run an F1 team will be extremely high. Hundreds of millions $. Therefore, is this the reason why GM and soulless Mary Barra are busy laying off thousands of people so that they can afford this new F1 team? They are booting the so called "GM Family" members to the street so that they pump their ego with an F1 team.... Your thoughts on this?

Much more goes on!
Aside from the red buttons, there's also bin naps, poker, restroom side-gigs, parking lot trunk sales and grievance filing.

Are you sure it's not because the greedy a$$ union demands unreasonable wages to push buttons?

GM is active in quality disinvestment.
The very people responsible for quality are being let go.
When we read about government investigations and recalls later, we should all remember what was lost for the gain of a handful of top GM executives.

GM should be spending the money that they will spend on F1 on improving the quality of their vehicles. Also, it’s just sick that they are laying people off left and right but they see no issue with wasting money on F1. I hope their engines are a complete embarrassment all over the globe.

Musk does not need to waste his time, cash or engery on the big 2 (Stellantis isn't American).
They are imploding on their own just fine.

PS Ford did create a seperate business unit for EVs. It failed from inception. So would a GM EV business unit. Right now GM sells few EVs, and loses thousands on each vehicle sold. How will it botch the hybrids? Ask anyone in engineering. Oops. Maybe don't ask.

If he just wanted to troll, Musk could buy all the legacy car companies and liquidate them.

Then Tesla would be the only American made car, and he could ask for government protection and subsidies 😅

Indeed he doesn't.

The biggest middle finger across the industry would be to purchase a majority stake in each, and rearrange their internals.

I know if I had Elon money, I would make some waves. And laugh, just because you can.

Musk doesn't care about the legacy auto companies.

Is it a tax write off?
Is it desperation to acquire fresh eyes to the brand which should largely be known around the world?
Is it something else?

No one knows. What people do know is that the GM brand has suffered under the push for EV, under logo neutering, and under the current nonsense going on with the corporation.

There's a reason why GM, Ford, and Stellantis are very different than Tesla valuations. If you want to rival Tesla, then you need to sever ICE from EV, and let sub-corporations each rise and fail based upon those merits. The public and including Wall Street, know that with these three, there's nothing special about them, and as such, will always value them as a fraction of Tesla.

If I was Musk, I would purchase a 51% stake in each, and right size each corporation. It's pretty telling and also sad, that he has much more valuation then the big 3 combined.

It won't cost as much as you think. Motorsports at GM was ramped up over the past few years and is already supporting multiple teams across multiple series. At most, there might be some headcount increase.

The biggest cost is the bureaucratic cost of joining F1. That could be entry costs, the anti-dilution fee, etc....

This might be one of the smartest things to do since racing is the most successful marketing tactic to get high income customers especially outside the US.

10 billion in stock buybacks last year at this time, then another 6 billion this year. Half a billion for F1 is a fraction of this.
It is incredible that vast sums are blown but thousands are put to pasture to save mere millions.
It's as callous and ugly as it gets.
Adjust your level of dedication and passion accordingly.

I think Cadillac IMSA team is a waste of money. 99.99% of GM / Cadillac buyers don't care that there is a Cadillac team nor they even know or care to know. AND with an F1 team, 99.99% of GM buyers couldn't care less about that nor think that somehow the Trax or Lyriq is remotely an F1 car.. This F1 adventure will be yet another GM waste of money so that Mary Barra and Mark Reuss pump their egos that they have an F1 team while destroying the livelihood of thousands of people that they fired and badly affected their livelihoods. Also they'll sell their sweet GM stock at potentially higher prices
