Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

Our manager pretends that everything is fine

I don't know if that's supposed to make us feel at ease, but for me the exact opposite is true.
When the manager behaves as if everything is in the best order, I start to worry even more because we all know that it is not. Who still has faith in these managers here?

“Upper management is paying for trolls”

Just what WD needs. Conspiracy theorists.

Name calling and snobbery aside from both sides, I would like to share my experience which I think it's fair and not exaggerated. I've been with WDC for more than 13 years on both HDD and SSD side.

Just like any other companies, there are groups/teams that you want to be part of, and there are that you want to stay away.

WDC is not people oriented company. You could tell from small perks such as coffee, snacks, and/or the lack of and other amenities. SanDisk was much better.

I've worked four 4 other companies in the same industry, and WDC is by far the least technical. Not saying there are no smart people here, but many are lack of industry experience and relying too much on inefficient process they came up.

WDC employees work hard, not smart. This is harsh, but if you want to be honest this is obvious if you've paid attention on how much rework and redundancies that happen everyday.

WDC is an authoritarian and political organization. Groups try to 1-up others so they are afraid to take risk fearing that they would lose face if they make mistake. Some managers keep asking individual contributors to be proactive and assertive without considering the amount of work that have been assigned to them.

Obviously we got our job done this past 20+ years, but we spend a lot of time doing firefighting instead of more creative technical work. IMHO for a typical 10 people job, WD needs at least 12. WDC is not a good place for those who are looking to learn and grow their career.

@5wxn+1nMrXdlo you are so funny dude. I joined WD 10 years ago when stock was $100 and this year they laid me off and stock was less than $40, so it's not management's fault, it's my fault, cheers! WD would be back to $100 soon since they let me go. GO!GO!GO! Fellass!

The company runs just like the government. Compartmentalized and inefficient with waste everywhere. Truth is most of these directors have no clue about the processes they are managing. The managers are all to busy playing nice instead of holding subordinates accountable. As for the inevitable layoffs, I'm going to ride the wave all the way to the beach!
Remember, we are all mushrooms, so stop crying and get over it! Its just a job.

Posters here must be hitting a nerve. Upper management is paying for trolls ( @5csv+1nMrXdlo & @5wxn+1nMrXdlo ) to attack us.

My apologies for breaking the unwritten rule. It’s always someone else’s fault. Hang on to that. Complain about management. Congratulate each other on how well you complain. Come here for solace and support. Don’t analyze yourself.

“Hint, check the dislikes”

Gee. Am I supposed to be surprised that calling out people as a drain on the company displeases them?

Seriously, do you come here for affirmation? To join in some echo chamber? But, hey, other people are “bootlickers”.

I left. Oh wait. How does that fit into your “bootlicker” story?

The company needs people who can reason. I’m not seeing that from you.

Oh sad me. I’ll probably get down voted again.

Now to answer the question I’m sure you are burning to ask. Why post here if I’ve left? Why criticize the people who stayed?

A lot of good people are still at WD. People I care about. People who deserve better from their coworkers than a lot of the water cooler malcontents here.

Leave. Make room for people who want more than a severance. Don’t make managers let someone go who is contributing just so you can continue to draw a paycheck. Grow a backbone. Or admit you will live a career as a mediocrity, no matter the company.

@4dtt.. By your logic 90% employees should leave. Apart from a few bootlickers, every one has similar opinion. Hint: check likes vs dislikes on that comment

If you have such contempt for the management, leave. Seriously what the he-l are you doing? Selling hours of your life for a paycheck at a place you disdain? How pathetic.

True, 1st line managers, and 2nd line managers (directors) barely do have control over anything. All decision making is from the disconnected Senior Directors and up. Basically, only the employees allowed in business class during flights lol... Many of the managers they promoted/hired can barely find their head from their a-s anyway. Almost none of them understand the process. Many still don't know how to open a ticket in servicenow... or even how to expense something. People skills are long gone. Just a bunch of technocrats up top feeding from the slop trough.

manager is a stretch bc some more like tech lead with direct reports and the sr director or vp makes decisions, so don't be surprised if they seem unaware and fine

Perhaps your manager has been around long enough to learn that spending your life in a panic about something you can’t control is self abuse.

Doesn’t mean they’ve just given up. They may be interviewing. They may realize that being ineffectual because you spend all your time complaining is a good way to get laid off.

I was told 1 month before I was laid off that I had nothing to worry about that the only way that I would be let go is if the company closed or I quit.
I do believe at the time he believe he told me what he knew at the time and I still do!
Moral to the story:
Your manger may be telling you the truth but he is at the mercy of his mangers and so on.
I still had a uneasy feeling (my intuition) that I was going to be laid off

I do have to say two days after being let go I realized how toxic the environment was to my over all health.

There are jobs out there in high tech!!
I get 20-30 notices from LinkedIn everyday in my field of expertise!
Don’t let social media tell you differently!
Does not matter if there is a lay off or not take control of your life and make a decision It’s your life!
