Does Chevron sponsor green cards for employees who’ve been in country and on assignment for a long period of time?

Chevron is either being very selective with certain employees which it will sponsor for US residency Green Card applications or it has recently discontinued the practice altogether. I knew a Canadian citizen who was hired by Chevron and who was applying for a US residence visa, and when this person was so close to being able to apply, Chevron abruptly stopped sponsoring the contract employee. This was over 6 years ago. The employee had to risk leaving the US to travel back to Canada, hoping that US Immigration was not going to impede re-entry into the US to continue (his/her) employment. Luckily, this person was allowed to re-enter once again as a tourist. In the end, the employee finally applied and got a US Resident Green Card. Some stories still have happy endings.

My experience is that virtually all US staff taking foreign assignments did it either for the $$$$ premium, or to get into a management position when repatriated (standard high-p-t career path). Virtually NONE were technically advanced, average at best. If you're looking to excel technically, taking a Chevron foreign assignment is the best way to stall your career.

If your visa runs out just grab a juicy overseas slot for a year and return. One colleague of mine cleverly managed a business trip to Thailand just before his visa expired. CVX kept him there on full expense account for months until it was sorted. Sweet.

All those angsty about expat salaries, newsflash when expats get green card they are moved to US payroll and no longer receive expat benefits for US assignments

Lol I haven’t seen many “very competent” Americans in my 9 years here. The good ones I’ve worked with move on to other companies.
There are some amazingly average people within this company (stateside and abroad). It’s not hard to outperform them.

Many expats are orphaned because Chevron ran the business into the ground. UK, Norway, Philippines, Indonesia, Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela, Thailand, La Habra, etc.. All these people need green cards as most outperform Yanks.

Chevron shouldn’t sponsor free cards. . Plenty of very competent Americans not getting paid expat salary’s that should be first choice for positions. Expats need to be sent home or be on same salary as their in country colleagues after one rotation. Do you see Americans being able to stay in uK like Britain in USA. This has been something that should have been addressed before the last two big layoffs in 2016 and 2020 to avoid a next one in 2022.

A very, very difficult sell in Chevron, as it is a very expensive and time-consuming process. You better be able to walk on water, or have a friend high up (how most of them are done), before you'll be considered.

It all depends on your performance, boss, and what payroll you are on. Be sure you want it since you will forfeit all your expat benefit. Better to just stay expat if you can, especially if you are on one of the payrolls which is higher than US (Oz, Canuck, Africa, etc).

Yes, if you are a petrotech, otherwise no. I had a pending adjustment of status application with another sponsor, they wouldn’t even port the application and become sponsor for the last step in the immigration process. HR is very unsupportive of anyone making request.

Probably not much help but they sponsored mine in 2009. The process took just over a year within Chevron. It requires firstly a strong boss who supports the concept of rewarding lengthy service with the opportunity for permanent residency. If your supervisor will not go to bat for you big time then you will not have the opportunity. Next, after they present a good justification to their supervisor (assume this next level is a GM type, PSG 27+) then you may have the chance to proceed further. At this time a solid justification for an advancing career path within the USA needs to be proven, or at least implied. This took several iterations for me to get the wording right. Why? Because the next step after a few legal dept /HR reviews is to go to Chevron executive leadership for final approval (at least VP HR). So along the way there are approval steps which will depend on the approvers views rather than specific policy. For me the stars aligned. I guarantee that with current personnel in this approval chain I would have failed at the final hurdle. After approval the process was pretty quick, a few months before getting my green card after a year of supplying loads of data etc. Chevron will not arbitrarily support green card applications amongst employees on expat or H1B assignments as this would open the floodgates (I was an L1A by the way). Nor do they want to be seen as a conduit for green cards with USCIS as this would dilute future credibility. If you think you have a case then go for it but do not assume it is anywhere near guaranteed nor consistent in its application. I had more colleagues fail than succeed. Like I say, I was lucky the stars aligned for me and now am happy to be a citizen of the USA. Good luck!
