Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

AIC layoffs

You noticed that there's a reminder again in Socrates about tailgating right? Same thing happened when they announced the "re-org" mischievousness that they did and AZ shutdown.

They announced that there's going to be a "planned maintenance" for the HVAC in Austin but overall, they're letting go people from different organizations. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Time to pave way for Mountain View talents...

That's why they're laying off in the ICs, to free up money for competitive salaries in Mountain View.

But the SLT won't be happy with what that'll cost, and potential employees there won't be happy to work for a company that lays off all the time.

Mountain View may not work out well.

Are we supposed to "assume goodness"?

Someone on reddit said that they were let go during a leave of absence. There was a lot of speculation that people could save themselves by going on a leave. Now we know.

A cynical person could speculate that going on a leave would make one MORE vulnerable because they are sight unseen and not playing any crucial roles on the team.

As Ex GM. They will never get Bay Area talent with their sh---y a-s pay scales and no RSU. GM really need to think this direction.

Will they close another Innovation Center to fund Mountain View?

They only need so many ICs anyway.

Then another 10% will happen again for AIC & GIC in 2025 to give way to Mountain view site.

Well, it happened. Email sent out at 5 AM this morning of the "difficult decision to say goodbye to some of our colleugues". It did not say how many.

From what I overheard from two managers talking, an email came out Friday; it sounds like a 10% cut for Software and Services.

Also, sounds like before the end of the year, it looks like they will be finally zeroing in on level 8 Staff engineers with Critical Technical Talent awards at the 3 original innovation centers(GM wants to relocate this $$ for Mountain View talent). These monetary fluff people fall into Arden’s cost reduction savings plan. GM is highly overpaying these people, and it looks like there will be a huge chunk of them that will be sandbagged in the next cuts or February 2025 in Software and Services. Odds are like everyone else, their managers will be giving them false assurances that they will be protected.

Putting your retirement savings in your own employers stock is a direct violation of investment 101. You don’t put all your eggs in one basket (those eggs being your regular income and retirement). No amount of optimism will bring back the lost investment and retirement funds from when GM filed in 2009.

And you do you on your vehicle purchases but with a slow down unfolding, buying an expensive vehicle right now doesn’t seem too wise. Think you may benefit from some financial classes.

I'm choosing to:

  1. Assume goodness.
  2. Buy the most expensive car GM makes to show my loyalty.
  3. Enroll in the GM stock purchase program, dedicated 20% of my income to it.
  4. Showing up at least an hour early with bagels and coffee.
  5. Take ownership of my own inadequacies by working harder and volunteering for more work.
  6. Wearing a full wardrobe of GM badged clothing from the GM General Motors Company Store.

Fun fact, AZ was never actually shut down and I've heard the lease was recently renewed.
