Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Letter to CEO

Who else is ready to sign a letter saying we are not going back in the office? Not sure about you all but we (Rockies) had been told for months any possible office time would be "hoteling" when needed.

We deserve WFH if we can do it. Let's get this started.

Give me a break, please. Workers in an oil company need to be in at the office for at least 3-5 days out of work week for efficiency. This is a multidisciplinary project based business where sometimes minute to minute and hour to hour collaboration is required for best results. If you cannot see that then maybe you are not really what the company needs.

I feel like it's a war of extroverts vs introverts - I say let people do what's best for them. Hey look at that we are at "pro-choice". Why can't we all live and let live. I suppose it's to difficult for the controlling/ judgemental types.

Lots of companies have seen an increase in productivity. Who cares what people are doing at home as long as their work gets done. Oxy doesn't seem to have any real work culture anyway - they obviously do not care about that. Also, smaller offices mean lower overhead. Seems like a win/win scenario for the people who want it. Butts in seats mentality is so over and done. yawn . We are in a transition it's going to be exciting to see who adapts and who doesn't. I mean I have negative hope for Oxy but who knows.

Actually, in the case of oil company employees they are likely not in their Mom’s basement. They are in their own $500,000 house or condo. Probably still playing video games. They have nothing to complain about since they have nice secure jobs.

@4xyg+1bS983P7 - You hit the nail on the head. What id--t would sign a letter to the CEO after only having to come into the office three days a week. I mean really folks if this is the future minds we are all in deep sh@t. I don't care how smart a person is, or how long they went to school, to mention something like this is just a lack of commonsense. We are not a union, so grow up and go to work the three days.

Great idea, OP - I'll help you write it:
===========
Dear Vicki - as a millennial, I don't want to return to the office even for 3 days/week. I would much rather stay in my mom's basement, eating Hot Pockets and playing Call of Duty. I commit to staying logged into my laptop and answer the occasional email so I appear busy.
Your entitled employee,
Mille E. Nial

@2cyx+1bS983P7 All big cities are having issues after tying the hands of the police and other authorities. Same is happening in Houston, Dallas, Austin, Chicago, Detroit, New York, etc. It will only get worse until the cops get more involved and criminals are locked away because they are violent offenders. Home is the safest place, but most work in offices. Working in Metroplexes have always come with some risk.

You WFH people are the most immature people I have ever run into. The WFH was a temporary measure so that companies could operate during covid. How did you ever get the idea it was for the comfort and benefit of the employees. Be happy with some WFH days during the week. If you don’t like this then quit but you will not have many comrades quitting with you. Oh, and try to explain your quitting over this to another oil company in an interview situation. I would rather hire someone who got laid off without cause over a person who quits because they must come into the office. It is all about attitude.

I would like to see 50% quit. You are crazy if your think thousands of people would just walk away from their salaries and benefits. I hope they set a date and those that don't want to come in can quit. I would be willing to bet less than 5% would actually walk away from their job. 50% is just throwing a number out there.

Unless you are an investment banker who has to wheel and deal, WFH is going to be the way of the future. We all know this is a culture war that is already going on between boomers and millennials, with upwards of 50% of employees saying they would quit their jobs if forced back into the office. The older generation will retire soon and WFH will be the way of the future.

OP. By signing a letter as proposed you would make it easy for HR to draw up the next lay-off list. You would be helping the company out. Keep up the good work.

WFH was a bandaid for the pandemic. It WILL NOT be the way of the world. Get back to the office if you want to work, grow and see progression in your professional life. If you want to WFH get put of oil and gas.

Afraid of vaccines? We have been going for a month now. Glad we can do hybrid. My advice: join Amazon then!

And stop picking on and blaming Boomers. How rude and you had better NOT be on MY TEAM. Us Boomers and happy with WFH, hybrid schedule or whatever to keep our jobs which we love and are very grateful and thankful to have.

If you don’t like something and can’t change it then either live with it or get out. That is a very simple rule that applies to many situations.

Boomers be like, “You gotta be seen in the physical world so people know you’re giving 110% everyday to a company that could care less about you!”

It’s been so beneficial commuting to the office only to have to wear a mask and participate in Teams meetings at my desk with my door closed and then commuting home. That’s sarcasm incase you Boomers are confused. Them good pension plans be messing with your critical thinking skills

That would suck to not have an office and just have a workstation area. It would certainly save on office space though.

Hoteling is a system of unassigned seating in a corporation’s building, or a “co-working” space that specializes in this concept. An employee will reserve a workstation based on their current needs within their given space ahead of time, or arrive with an “open ticket”.

The hybrid schedule is great and if you don't have a medical reason then start participating in it. Three days a week is nothing, and if you told me I could do this two years ago I would have been first inline to sign up. When you own a company then you can have everyone WFH, but until then stop ruining it for the rest of us with your whining. All of you WFH "all the time folks" are going to end up getting the hybrid model taken off the table. Shut the he-l up please.

I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to work OXY’s hybrid schedule. It’s much better than Exxon or BP’s schedule. Try to find an oil company that has a better schedule than OXY’s: it’s hard.

Why don’t you show the company how frustrated you are by quitting your job. When enough of your types do that they will throw a big party for the people who really want to work for Oxy.
