Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Certain about getting laid off

I always hope for the best even though I expect the worst, but unlike some here I can never be certain that I will be a target before I am actually informed about it.

Why is it that some people are convinced that they will be laid off? What makes you believe so, what signs do you take into account?

There are four things keeping me from leaving:

  1. For engineering, GM pays much more than any supplier or OEM.
  2. The VSP (too late now) forbids working for a supplier or contract house for 3 years. Nowhere to go!
  3. Workload. Anyone from engineering knows the workload at suppliers is intense and much heavier than at GM. Or they'll find out!!! The term, "design engineer" is real and they expect you to do everything, from every level of expertise (for less money).
  4. I live in Metro Detroit. Most of the jobs are an hour away in miserable traffic - Plymouth, Auburn Hills, Farmington Hills, Novi.

Summary: I'll take my chances with a layoff. With this recession, the manufacturing and engineering folks are in demand. Opposite of the last one where IT/tech people were in demand. You can down vote me for saying this but you know it's true. We can stick around for more pay, less work and a shorter drive but there are many opportunities out there.

If you feel like you got no where else to go...you're worried. If you have actual talent and work ethic, whatever your discipline you provide to GM, you'll land on your feet. May not be at GM; but does that matter?

Or “she” may dislike you. Just a reminder that leaders/managers of both s-xes were making bad/non-professional decisions, based on petty dislike, and/or little to no proof or documentation of “poor performance”. Total setups leading to those recent layoffs of very experienced, high performing, loyal employees, it was so obvious. Let’s just be real on that side of it all. Feel bad for those left not taking the VSP option, but maybe they’re more “liked”…

I’m an employee who they’ve given nothing to do for years. I’ve asked many many many times for just a crumb of work but it never lasts long. Somehow I haven’t been laid off yet but I expect to be. I barely even feel like I work here.

All the competent managers at GM can hold a meeting in a phone booth.

Cynical view, and also wrong.
Most competent managers know exactly who is on which project/program and will get feedback on performance from team leaders. Merit does matter and it’s inappropriate for managers to cultivate special treatment. Not everyone has a bad relationship with their team or their leadership.

The biggest sign is not being good buddies with your boss.

Merit means nothing. Your boss probably doesn't know how much work you're really doing, or who on the team is doing what.

He might know what the "team" accomplished, but not you personally.

But he knows if he likes you.

Disability is a protected class. If they were to lay you off, they would need to go above and beyond to demonstrate you were not doing your job.

How about disabled GM employees, which I am one of. Will I be targeted for a layoff? I get my work done either by working in the office or working from home. Before working from home went into effect and everyone had to show up to work each day. I would get into work on time and spend my day getting my work done. I rarely talked to my coworkers other than work related topics. My disability is related to one of the senses related to communication. I have been mocked, bullied and mistreated by past GM managers I have worked for. Some of them have even laughed at my struggle to communicate. But none of them ever accused me of not getting my work done on time. I ready don't know what to think if I will be layed off or not. But I came to the realization many years ago that I will most likely never be offered a promotion at GM.

Looking back before I got laid off my boss quit responding to my emails and DMs. I didn't pick up on it at the time just thought he was busy.

Buddy, sometimes you just can't tell.

I've seen 'slackers' who are well connected with leaders get preferential treatment.

And I've seen quiet worker bees get shown the door because they didn't have the right people looking out for them from above.

I'd be ok with employee separations if it was genuinely low performers. But in the truest sense. Employees that were told that their is a problem, given an improvement plan, and then were not able to make the necessary corrections.

During this recent round of terminations, I knew if people that had been exceptional performers for decades and all of the sudden received one review that said they had not met expectations - nothing more specific than that - and were let go without any performance improvement plan.

I'll always believe that in this current economy / climate, these recent (and future) terminations are targeting highly compensated / pensioners / higher medical costs / older / etc team members. But since that's mostly not legal to call those things out, they'll just say 'poor performance' and then show them the door.

The comment about 'if you have to ask - then you know the answer's isn't entirely true. I think it applies if you know that your leader(s) haven't been happy with your work lately or ongoing. But even if you're a stellar performer, you may still be targeted for all those other reasons.

Do you all really feel that way about WFH? Are you plant colleagues that install parts all day? I can understand if you are working at an assembly plant, you might be resentful about WFH colleagues.

If their are coworkers just lounging all day, then they either do not have enough work, or need to be downsized out of the company.

I can tell you first hand that WFH actually improved productivity for a lot of white collar colleagues. I remember people just talking to each other for 10 to 30 minutes multiple times a day - just b-s ing about their weekend or their kids. This was any time of day and every day of the week. When WFH happened, that all went away. Bosses would assign something and then follow up however many hours / days later and it had better be done.

I think some roles should absolutely be WFH. It's the boss's responsibility to monitor the workload and adjust accordingly.

And I know that the big shots want hybrid office/home because it requires less office space.

My money is on return to office - maybe even 5 days a week - but only because cities are not happy giving big companies like GM tax incentives and then not having all the employees in town spending money (gas stations, restaurants, etc.).

How was your last review? Does it look like they are setting you up for layoff? Do you make a lot of money? Are you older? On disability or have been? If, so you will be a target
