Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Last nail in GF’s coffin

Peter B was brought to get GF Malta back on road and it did improve the longevity of GF which was going to close. With Peter departing and now new incompetent and failed person taking over his role, GF has clearly no future. I doubt it will survive beyond few quarters now. With huge pressure on mature technologies (14 nm and higher) due to inventory pile up and no demand and most of the focus on 10/7/5/3/2 ( very obvious from top 3 Intel, TSMC and Samsung capex and revenue distribution), it is obvious GF is going to continue to fight for its survival as usual. It will be hard as it competes with UMC and SMIC for third tier foundry market at mature technology and photonics market. US operations will make it hard to survive.

A lot of this could have been avoided if A.T.U.L. email and PowerPoint had been used as a roadmap.

@3ykr very true, the lawsuits GF are filing are a joke and they stand to lose $2.5B or so with IBM, this is still pending against GF for breaking the 7nm mfg contract. These lawsuits GF are filing are smoke and mirrors to take the attention off the huge pending lawsuit against GF by IBM which could potentially sink them.

As for outsourcing results, look at the PDK group at GF, it is 90% outsourced and overall, it is not competitive with other foundries. IBM gave GF a leadership PDK when GF took over IBM's Microelectronics division, but GF quickly outsourced our PDKs and went from a leader to a follower. Of course, when you have a PDK leader who focuses only on outsourcing and nothing technical what do you expect. Another example of GF needing to clean house at the upper exec level and bring in bright new people who are motivated to change things and be leaders in the industry.

@2ush
The future is lawsuits and outsourcing.

I am confused by your post. It’s undeniable that Globalfoundries has poised itself for its own demise. It’s crystal clear the trajectory it is on. Unless some previously unknown behemoth customer or product magically appears out of thin air that requires Globalfoundries products or service - GF will continue its slow walk (with occasionally sprint) towards its own death

@2bws, why don't you enlighten everyone on what positive things now and in the future GF has going on which is going to increase revenue, save US jobs and overall make the company have better gross margins similar to UMC and/or TSMC?

The only torture is coming on here, once in a great while, and reading the same nonsense that GF is doomed, while having the same clowns give out their Nostradamus predictions, which have consistently been wrong.

Obsessive behaviors are rampant.

Agree with post that Peter was able to increase longevity of GF and lot of dead woods were let go. Problem is that he created another problem by supporting lot of failed and incompetent individuals who were good in following orders from her. Now with Peter gone, these same individuals will be making decisions. You can only imagine what is in the future. Scary

Seems here we have few Tom’s pi-ps who are replying to the post. We should ask them. Do they know why HP was called career destroyer when she was on litho? Do they know how many people left GF while complaining about HP’s racist preference as she only wanted people who speak her language and think like her to stay in Litho? Do they know how many people were tortured and destroyed by her as she wanted them to leave to avoid competition?
Time will tell but when companies not able to find right leader and promote people like Her.. end is close.

@op, come on! Did you miss all the super cool Photonics and automotive deals posts on LinkedIn? GF doesn't need scaling. Photonics BU and efficiency gains brought by Phoenix will save the day. After all, Photonics folks go to big conferences. Have patience. There is a hockey stick trajectory around the corner. Also GF shows there's plenty of market at mature nodes. The pivot is working beautifully. By the way, does the CEO even talk about pivot these days? And don't forget 8.2.

GF will eventually sell the 2 remaining US fabs. Which means most of the plebs left at Malta and Burlington will continue to have jobs with the next 3rd rate company that comes in for sloppy seconds. GF continues to invest and expand in Asia/India/Europe. USA is the read headed stepchild
