Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Status of laid off employees in the Jan 2021 layoffs

What is the status of the 2900 ( official nos. , but then who is counting) employees that were shown the door in the recent layoffs ? Were some of them able to find other jobs internally or was that door shut down , now that most divisions have almost zero new recquisitions, as per new strategy.

Interesting thing to note is that the company laid off numerous employees who had 20 + years of experience and were actually productive and their onlyfault was that they were in the wrong group at the wrong time.

Meanwhile fresh graduate hiring plan and implementation will be in full bloom come Q2 and Q3 2021. After all they need to fill in the pipe line ! Ironically attrition among newer employees, esp. those who joined in the last 7-8 years and without a pension plan, is significantly higher than normal. Newer people leaving in droves since they have probably realized that career progression is severely limited in a zero - negative * growth* company.

Interesting times ahead !!!

It seems that people laid off could not get jobs internally, much less get an interview at all, even if well-qualified for the internal role.

I suspect Mike Roman will gone at some point. He was dealt a tough hand, but there’s only so long he can dance around the fact that the prospects for 3M growth are not good. Business transformation, Advance 3M, a three-year cycle of layoffs, have all been band-aids to led to perceived short-term optimism, but none of this is addressing the fundamental issue of lack of a path for growth. His tenure reminds me of the McNerney era - address cost, including six sigma and big layoffs of loyal long-term employees, and then leave it to the next CEO to figure out how to grow the company again.

The cycle of culling experienced (more expensive) employees with new graduates have been in play for a long time now. Everybody does it and so does this company. Nothing new here!

What has become an interesting trend is that in the last 5/6 years, the new/ newer employees are leaving the company in large nos. They join the company based on external reputation as an enterprise based on innovation and science. However in a short few years after working here they realize that career growth potential is very low and getting lower every year unless of course they take up management roles. Earlier there was some sort of job security for technical folks and in the last few years that has gone out of the window.

Hence leaving a company that provides zero to little growth potential becomes an easy decision for millenials.

I know 3M promotes an environment of integrity, transparency and not engaging in workplace retaliation. However... It seems there was some discretionary "axe grinding" going on with some employees being targeted because of past run-ins with management or long term medical issues. Local management worked with Corporate HR to ensure any legal issues wouldn't crop up.

Most requisitions were frozen, but a little bit of hiring in the US has occurred with laid off people. The requisitions are expected to be unfrozen just as soon as those laid off are finally no longer eligible to apply in late March.

It is important to note that all 2900 people have even been told yet. The US, Canada and a few other countries have announced, but much of the rest of the world has not told people they are fired yet.

Given this is the third layoff in three years and no end on the horizon, I know that many people 3M wants to keep are looking for the door as I type this.

its the circle of life (or death),, the swing of older productive employees making way for the new batch of snowflakes
