Dell's sudden 5-day return-to-office order leaves parents scrambling to find childcare

https://www.businessinsider.com/dell-staff-return-office-order-sparks-panic-parents-childcare-wfh-2024-10

"The expectation is that ALL Global Sales team members who can work from a Dell office be on-site five days a week, regardless of role," Bill Scannell and John Byrne, the company's sales chiefs, told staff in the internal memo seen by BI.

It was sent on a Thursday, giving staff notice of two working days.

One technical support worker said a senior leader informed them last week that the RTO might be required "because that's what Amazon is doing."

The online retailer recently told office staff to start coming in every day from next year. Stanford economist Nick Bloom, a world authority on remote work, previously told BI that Amazon's strict RTO push could be a "backdoor layoff" strategy to reduce head count without facing the consequences of formal layoffs.

I am not taking a side here. Both look ridiculous at times. But I'm not seeing why people here on the gm layoff board are in support of back to office orders.

I've seen most people look unhappy and low energy there. Any body who can minimize negative experiences is doing it OK. I wish I could but the stakes are too high.

Thanks for your sincere well-wishes. But never fear, I am and will continue to be fine. Enjoying my day from the comforts of home! No traffic, no office distractions, and the ability to be free of the bootlicker mentality.

So sad that you don't have the willpower to join me. But I suppose someone has to help prop up the local businesses, company cafeteria, etc.

Not to mention all your amazing collaboration opportunities. You'll have all the problems beat if you just hope a little harder.

Have fun with that.

@remj+1uUrLqDx seems like the rare breed of mouth-breathing schmuck that actually believes this tripe

"and as we accelerate our transformation and enter a rapid launch cycle, we are evolving Work Appropriately to drive the best collaboration, enterprise mindset and impact."

So big shot, how do you measure collaboration, enterprise mindset, and impact? What metrics are you assessing to ensure you and your followers are meeting expectations there?

"you are a bottom. Maybe you enjoy that, I'm not going to judge"
" it's weak as F"
"You are weak"
"You have no power and you are weak."
"Why am I not surprised you quoted a musical?"

You seem overly occupied with efforts to label others weak (and labeling yourself strong by contrast) as well as what appears to be some s-exual orientation put downs.

I'm not sure that's the strongest way to present your case and it's not really aligned with GM Behaviors. Maybe you should spend some time with the GM Plus ERG.

"Bub, your only hope at strength is to join me in song..."

Why am I not surprised you quoted a musical?
The only thing you'll be joining is the unemployment line.

"Yeah, like 99% of people, including yourself."

No.
I invested my money, including my bonuses all these years. I didn't YOLO by financing cars, boats and RVs or vacations like many of you. I didn't big-stuff it with a McMansion either. Everything is paid for. I get a car as part of my compensation, so no car payment. If I DECIDED to leave on Wednesday, I could afford to retire early. I also have passive income from businesses outside of work.

"Getting a little flustered :)"

I bet! You see, winning is taking control of your life and making great choices. Often taking calculated risks, paired with having a natural aptitude for the business will bump you up to the next level. Being a loser on the other hand is easy. You just show up, do the bare minimum and squeak by. You don't even show up, so your future is 100% certain. We both know how that future looks. It looks very different than mine, I can assure you of that. Deranged? Maybe to someone like you. A boot li---r? LOL Whatever gets you through the night "bub". Some invest in strategies, research and execution. Others invest in name-calling. Which is more effective?

If you haven't learned how to play the game by now, you've already lost.
By sticking it to "the man" will only stick it to yourself.
Enjoy.
GM really needs to clean house soon.

The poster who hasn't been coming in at all is actually one of the few here actually living GMs core values.

  • Be bold. How can this be any more bold?
  • It's on me. They are not waiting on management to solve this. They are taking the needed action now.
  • One team. Working together DESPITE THE DISTANCE.
  • Look ahead. They have realized that RTO is dead in the water, and are proactively living a better future.
  • Innovate now. This one might be a work in process.
  • Think customer. No customer would want their item to be made by a miserable, disconnected, and resentful employee base.
  • Be inclusive. They haven't closed off their approach and probably would be happier if more people acted the same.

A little room for improvement but overall a very solid effort! It sounds like a very strong case for a promotion.

Nah, you won't be seeing me anywhere near a GM facility, Wednesday or any other day. You enjoy trundling in like a good little peon. Maybe you'll get to select an additional crumb from the floor after lunch. I'll be comfortably at home.

Strong. So terribly strong. Bub, your only hope at strength is to join me in song...

"When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you."

Sing it with me, oh mighty one!

We can all see that you truly don't "little buddy." Individual contributors who aspire to half-a-s it as a power play are the true boot lickers. You can't make it on your own so you rely on a paycheck. You have no power and you are weak. See you at work on Wednesday. Stop by my desk with black coffee, nice and hot and keep the tip.

All one has to say, if ever called out for undone work, is that cross-functional collaboration, spontaneous hallway conversations, and company culture initiatives didn't leave me enough time to complete it all.

I thought that's why we are in-office? It's about much more than doing daily drudge work. And those big priorities take time out of the work week.

Probably better hire on a few more if you want it all covered.

Put up? Mail you a box for your laptop because you refuse to come into the office?
That isn't much of a threat. If your only leverage is working at half-speed, you are a bottom. Maybe you enjoy that, I'm not going to judge but it's weak as F and it's not going to earn you any respect from anyone.

"Work at half speed. Sh*t gets done when it gets done. Contract may not have much choice, but salaried do."

Bad advice.
If you do this in my group, I will give you chance to catch up. Remember, your performance is now measured. If you don't catch up, you will catch the door. You literally have no leverage. Do you know how many people will be vying for your spot on the team in this economy? LOL #delusional #keeptalking

They all follow the pay books from their handlers. Just like they coordinated C19 all around the globe in record time, they are now ordering people back into the office.

You have power in this.

Work at half speed. Sh*t gets done when it gets done. Contract may not have much choice, but salaried do.

People work "just" hard enough not to get fired. Employers pay personnel "just" enough not to quit.

Learn the game. You WILL earn your perks or bonuses one way or another.

"Remote work isn't a test for..."

Remote work is an endangered species.
Right now the potential for lost profits or some semblance of a competitive advantage is putting corporations in a mad panic to end remote work.
Just imagine how corporations will react when they are in the red.
The people still complaining/obsessions over remote work are in for a huge surprise.
These are the good times.
I'll repeat. THESE ARE THE GOOD TIMES!

Keeping a loose eye on an elementary school student is different than watching over a 6 month old.

Who cares what the company decided to do about physical space? They didn't solicit my feedback any time in the process so I'm not too invested in propping up the results of poor choices.

Go live in a foreign country if it aligns more with you on work/life balance. You won't be missed.

Why are the kids home in the first place? If you are working from home, then the kids should be in daycare or school. If they are home while you are working, means you are actually running a childcare while you pretend to fully focus on work. This is the reason why many companies want their employees back full-time. Also, if the buildings are sitting empty, that's not good either since they spent millions on the building every year.
In most foreign countries, people go to work 5 or 7 days a week. I don't hear them complaining. American's are such whiners and LAZY!!!

"RTO mandate are a direct attack on Women with kids who work."

Prior to March 15, 2020 if an office worker didn't show up to work they were marked absent. After 3 consecutive days, they were usually fired. Everyone was expected to show up to work.
In 2024, it's "a direct attack"?

RTO mandate are a direct attack on Women with kids who work. Companies DO NOT LIKE WOMEN. It’s a fact. With childcare prices hitting 60-100$ a day, a lot of women will exit the workforce.
