Chevron and COP ending WFH 01/2025

Will oxy follow suit? The hybrid schedule is the only thing keeping me in this dying industry:

Why is it so hard to post on this site without being sarcastic? Sometimes I think some people believe that the best posts are the ones with the best insults. I wouldn't be surprised if this post gets a sarcastic insulting reply. (you know it will)

What’s wrong with going back to the 9/80? Think of all the extra physical time together to enable events like:

  • Fireside chats with executives
  • Required playing of board games to teach employees about business.
  • Additional half day long get togethers on the plaza for team building
  • Arm wrestling contests

Etc

Oh the good old days…….

Hate to be negative but 17 years in this industry and the biggest lesson I've learned is take nothing for granted. I wouldn't be surprised to see OXY follow suit on WFH in time. Unfortunately as a new parent I tend to rely on this perk but it's just that....a perk. Not a guarantee.

If nothing else people at Oxy need to be aware that there are many workers coming into the job market from Exxon, Marathon, Conoco, and Chevron to name a few. Jobs in the oil business will be highly competitive to get. It might be a good time for Oxy to offload the slackers and upgrade their talent pool. There will be good workers losing their jobs just because of mergers and moving jobs overseas. If Oxy keeps the hybrid model and others get rid of it then even more talent will be available.

@2ade+1veDAy8l - I don't know what to tell you except that, if you are such a bad manager that you can't identify your slackers from three days in the office plus their productivity on WFH days, another 1-2 days per week in the office probably isn't going to help.

The slackers can more easily be identified 5 days in the office. The 9/80 wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Even with 9/80 and the high oil company salaries you are better off than the professional people in the manufacturing industry. Keep that in mind.

You will be like Marathon soon... Bought, forgot and laid off.

DAy81...I agree. Oxy pre APC merger was a non event company. Their current niche is to buy other's proven reserves and produce them. Organic growth? Not since Colombia in the 1980's. They will be bought, assets stripped and employees jettisoned. Anadarko for all of its issues would have been better served within Chevron.

Y'all making the mistake that there are talented hard working people at Oxy. Oxy or not, none of you will be missed in the industry and the slackers flow from CVX/COP/XOM too Oxy, not the other way around. There's a reason for that.

Seems pretty short-sighted. There won't be a mass exodus, but there definitely will be folks who leave, and it will disproportionately be the top performers who can find better options. The good employees who stay will be less productive—wasting time with commutes and losing the focus time provided by WFH. The slackers who aren't doing their jobs from home will continue to slack at the office (including by distracting their co-workers, who could have gotten more done focusing at home). I'm all for in-person and collaboration, but three days a week at the office is a great balance. The current system is good for both Oxy and employees.

: @qwh+1veDAy8l - Wishful thinking on people leaving in mass. I love the wfh Monday and Friday, but if they call us back full-time I am pretty sure the technical people will be back in the office if required. There are not that many well paying jobs with such good benefits right now with a lot of the larger companies cutting back and shipping jobs overseas. When Chevron buys us we will either be sent packing or work the schedule they want us to. Probably most of us will be sent down the road.

Company of the year in the mining sector? You really do not know what an E&P does....Probably why the stock is hovering at $50.00 today.

I don’t see Oxy doing this after we won company of the year in mining sector for work life balance. It would lead to a mass exodus of talented folk.

It is about time. This move from wFH will drive people away. No need for layoffs.
