In California, work is "at will". You can be asked to leave for any reason.
because all of the good people have left so there's less need for layoffs?

True - no layoffs in sight so I think we can breath easy the next 3-5 years. By then who knows oil prices may be double, and our salaries with them!
Nothing is secure right now. Inflation, interest rates, student loans, immigration, food chain, supply chain, heavy metal mines, semi conductor manufacturers, government spending, foreign peace, etc etc etc.
This facade will last for a few months to 6 months longer, 9 at the max. Then we will have some corrections. I believe this could be a long roller coaster ride.
If you put together all the economic indicators together a perfect storm is on the horizon, possibly by July.
@OP, enjoy it while it lasts. $100+ oil and record inflation are not a good recipe for sustained economic growth. Save your dollars and be prepared for a downturn.
OP must be really, really new to the oil industry. Even in good times, "job security" is no more than maybe 5 years.
As long as MW is in charge, there is no job security ever. He lays off very often so I never feel comfortable with him around.
