Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

What are the many reason you've been given why your promotion was not approved?

How many of 'em are B.S.? What exactly goes on "in the room?"

@4rzc, I’ve been given that same BS excuse “We’re holding the position open as a development position”. My response was always “what about developing me in that position? I certainly earned it.” After that—- crickets!

It’s all a popularity contest. If someone in the “inner circle” is up for the same promotion as you, they will be chosen. Doesn’t matter what BS reason they give you. That’s the clear-cut reality of this game you’re in.

If you came in to the company through a development program, you start with a great advantage. Your PDR and other PDC reps likely were part of the recruiting process and they know you. If you are labeled a high pot, they and their superiors now know who you are. If you did not come in through a development program, you start off at a disadvantage. I wish you good luck. You will need someone pulling for you in the PDC and someone pushing for you from your BU (lobbyists). Your chances might be better if you are one of the diversity targets, but not guaranteed.

"I know someone who moved from 25 to 27 in a year (with a mid yer promo to 26). ”

And I also know someone who moved from 22 or 23 to 26 in 4-5 years. It's rare, but possible.

"We're holding that as a development position". Euphemism for "we need to only promote high-pots".

@4pfv. They were skilled at convincing mgmt they were a stable genius that needed to be paid at an elevated level or would be a flight risk. Those who worked with them knew the 25 to 27 rise was not warranted, Mgmt stupidly gave them a team whose spirits were promptly destroyed. The team was taken away when the horrible employee survey results for them as a supervisor came in. But no other punishment. They still collect 27 $$$$$

Talking about disfunctional unjust process. Asked who made the promotion decision and who was sitting in the table to present the candidates. No clue! What s the criteria if anybody knows.

Who are in the room when talking about promotions? your supervisor? GM, VP?
should one spend time on letting these decision makers to know whoever is expecting a promotion? I guess with the same performance, if VP or GM already knows someone's name, he will have advantage to get promoted.

I know someone who moved from 25 to 27 in a year (with a mid yer promo to 26). Bottom line is that management can do whatever they want. if you didn’t get a promo, all of their reasons about it not being in their control are bs. They just didn’t want to give you a promo

My boss said they approved like way more promos than usually this year because of inflation. But not mine.

These days it is pretty much done using the years in grade vs PMP rating matrix plots. Ask your PDC rep to see the chart for your grade/function. If you are in the top 15% you will likely get promoted, usually this means four years in a grade with well above average ratings the last 2-3 years.

Even though I met all of the criteria in the career ladder matrix at the next level for my function, I was told that the pdc talked about how I wouldn’t be competitive at that level in a different function if I ever wanted to leave my function (which I had no reason nor intention to ever do)

“We don’t do mid-cycle promos”. Total BS because someone in the group had just gotten a mid-cycle promo

People don’t know who I am outside of those that I work with and for, so I wouldn’t get approved if they presented my promo at the PRC level. 4 years in grade.
