Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Most-hated company

Do you think Exxon is the most-hated company by its employees? I don't know if this is widespread but everybody I work with hates the fact they're stuck working here. I've never seen this much hostility towards a workplace and I worked for four O&G companies so far. None of them were loved but this is some new level hatred.

What people resent most about this company, is the dishonesty and deceit. Lying is not ethical behaviour. Treat people with respect, be honest, leave them their dignity. In short: be human!

GLOAT. Now that’s raw talent! Meaningless, but did get up to five letters. How about SMILE? Successful Man In Life’s Endeavors. It’s even on topic. LOL

Yep, smiled my way to almost 40 years and several million dollars. Made lots of friends along the way and helped a lot of people develop successful careers as I climbed the ladder. Now I smile even more. But you be a big tough man and rock that boat. Or sink EM. You must be so very powerful and important. Sad little thing. LOL

Smile and hang in there?

Well - as they say.
If it isn't possible to rock the boat, then it is time to sink the boat.
Smile and move on.

Yea. Never heard of any other company hated by its employees except GE and amzn. But xom is the most hated. Most people have issues with managers or particular political clique at work. At xom the hate is for the culture, the processes, the system, the structure, the managers, and coworkers who are byproducts of said issues. A large case study by hbs should be done on xom.

Life is full of bullies. They are in all levels of all companies, so you will probably run into a few whether at EM or elsewhere. My advice is to just ignore their insults and to do your best with whatever work he/she assigns to you. Chances are good that either you or the bully will move to a new assignment in a couple of years. Don’t let it get to you, and don’t make a hasty or poor career decision because of them. I’ve outlasted some of the worst. Just smile and let it roll off your back. Bullies feed off fear and intimidation, so never give them that satisfaction. If they see that they can’t get under your skin, they may even back off. Forget about that person and your job when you go home, and enjoy your life. If anything, occasionally howl with laughter driving home thinking about what a shallow pitiful person they are and how they can’t break or intimidate you. You’ll be fine, just hang in there.

Maybe it is because sycophancy (brun-nasing) requires it goes both ways. Up and down.
Kiss up and kick down.
That goes far in many cultures, once they start failing.
No group feeling. (What are 'feelings' anyway?)

Not saying Human Centipede is art btw.
Dallas Opera is Art.

My supervisor at EM is a bully. He shames and humiliates me in front of my colleagues. At one time, I almost reported him to HR but decided not to. My colleagues are just silent about this, I don't dare to ask what their opinions are. It just so happens that I am not his favorite and he does not give me a good project where I could shine. I am sure I am not the only one who feels the same. I don't hate EM but I don't like how the leaders are managing.

I too have noticed the negativity towards the company on this board.
Seen it since last July actually. (I monitor this stuff for my job!)

Other company boards tend to stick to the Layoff area (is it coming? / what do i do when it happens?).

On this ExxonMobil board (and some other companies, must say), there is often objective to cut the company's many negative aspects down to the bone. Layoff not a mention.
Extremely wide-ranging and extremely bitter.
And I think the OP was asking 'why?'

2 possibilities among others:

  • 1. There is no other forum for expressing negative opinions on the company's practices.
  • 2. That ExxonMobil truly does hire the best and brightest, but does not sufficiently drain their talents on a daily basis. Leaving free time to think and express their opinions. Somewhere.

I'm favoring #2 right now. Some of this stuff is very witty.

When people say working "in the industry" or something goes on in "O&G" - it means they don't actually work for EM. They are just trolls, or fired contractors, fanning the smoke for fire. EM employees should not despair, things will brighten up again.

A large percentage across all industries hate their boss actually. XOM may be an outlier due to "XOM Privilege" being exposed.

Exxon is probably the most despised company in the world for the general population.
This is partly because it is ubiquitous - geographically and exploitatively.
Among O&G workers and analysts, it has been respected in the past but this has downturned steadily as it fails to evolve. It is now considered a dinosaur with it's head in the ground.

Regarding the general environment for workers (who are so pitifully ridiculed below),
as long as corporate socialism (aka industrial capitalism) maintains control the working man is not a human being. Nothing new.
And that world order will be maintained by any means necessary.

Forgive my optimism.

I recently wrapped up my 4-decade career, having spent the past 3 decades in this industry. It wasn't always fun, but overall it was extremely satisfying work and I was almost always excited about my job. I've never worked for XOM, so I really have no idea if XOM is a toxic work environment. I've been reading the boards here lately, and if the posts are any indication, the toxicity is off the charts. As posts, comments and replies tend to go on any and every platform, the words expressed are more telling of writer than the subject at hand. You get to see the filter and the outlook of the person doing the writing.
Toxicfilteritis is easy to catch from your coworkers, no matter where you work. It's universal. I can only say, check up on what filter you see things through. Shut off what other people say and form your own opinion.

Most hated company? Na. What exxon is doing is not that much different than many other corporate companies.

You should be thankful you are currently working for XOM after four oil and gas companies. What about those companies you abandoned after taking their training and secrets. At the time you left, they were probably regretting hiring you after training you. It cuts both ways.

Oh .. I do feel your pain. You must be feeling so stressed out and unloved at EM. It must just be the worst ever. Ha!

If you are looking for job secure you might try another planet; you won’t find it on this one.

When I worked this industry (1980 to 2016) there were plenty of booms and busts, there was no job security and the stress during this period was real. I worked for many different oil companies and several oil service companies I had to hustle to provide for my family.

But guess what, I did it. I ended up a millionaire several times over. I started with ZIP and built a moderately successful, very happy life.

Don’t c-ap out now. Get off your knees, pull up your pants, adjust your attitude, work your butt to the bone, never stop looking for the next job and pray to your god for it bit off luck.

Finally, no company gives a sh!t about you beyond what you can do for the company. No company will ever love you; that is for your account.

Based on experience, I recommended you get back to work.

No one is stuck working for EM. Anyone and everyone can leave at any time. If you ran a small business and your employees hated you, why would you have any loyalty to them, or care if they left? Better yet, if you were an employee working at that business, why would you stay?

If the pay and benefits are enough to keep you at EM, then you should have enough of a work ethic to do your job well. That used to be enough for most people. But now, too many people want everything stacked completely in their favor. They want to constantly complain, do little or nothing to perform their job, will quit at their whim, and still expect companies to provide them some kind of job security for life. That is a changing social norm, not just EM. Sometimes you get what you ask for.

I think it's more stressful now for those of us who aren't millionaires and still have a mortgage and families to support. The job security we thought we had is now gone. Executives disapointed a lot of people to say the least.
