Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

People sometimes exaggerate

If I wasn't working here and was getting an impression of the company based only on what some people write here, I would think that EM has the most toxic work environment ever. It is not my intention to defend this place because I myself think it could be much better, but let's be fair - isn't toxic work environment pretty much the norm in a lot of companies? I have worked at several companies in the industry and this one is definitely not the worst in that regard.

To the everyone wins a trophy, you are the poster child of what is wrong with Exxon. I didn’t come to Exxon to compete against other engineers. I came to do engineering which I love. I don’t appreciate working hard all year performing the work I was assigned only to be ranked NSI because Darren Woods dictated 8% will be ranked that. It is unethical if you can’t discern that you have bigger issues.

People don't like to compete anymore. Everyone gets a trophy!!!
People who were great at taking tests got into the workforce and couldn't articulate value so didn't get the 'A' they were entitled to. Instead of figuring out why they blame 'incompetent' managers. ExxonMobil is just a reflection of our F'up society.

I understand what OP is saying. Yes the company has done some pretty sh---y things but so has every other company. If you really don’t like it here then leave - and if they company pays so poorly / has terrible culture / has terrible benefits etc., then you’ll have zero problem leaving and working elsewhere.

Yes I’ll wait downvote but that is the reality. Why sit and complain when you can go work for 1000s of other places. Try Honeywell - I have a friend who tells me about them…constant furloughs (built into their annual business plans) to save money / trick shareholders, benefits almost double the cost of ours / constant downsizing (yes you think Exxon is bad), expectation of min 50 h work or more, zero career development, and so on.

It’s not all bad here. And the grass isn’t necessarily greener - sure it is sometimes but not always.

Here’s a tip. This is a layoff site. Perhaps you should hop on the intranet or linked in if you want to see Exxonmobil positive spins and propaganda.

This site sometimes has useful data around CL pay bands, salary increases and tip-offs to upcoming news. The rest is just bashing the corporation, you could actually get paid to do that at green peace or a liberal news outlet.

But wait that would take a pair (no misogyny intended, meant figuratively). Instead you come to an anonymous site to bash the very company that puts food on your table and a roof over your head. Guess there’s no room for logic here.

The great thing about the work contract is it is optional. You can leave tomorrow and you should if you hate the Corp. Period.

I’ve worked for a number of different companies over the years. It’s never good to be with a contracting organizing which ExxonMobil I am with a loss of 25,000 or more employees over the last two years from about 85,000. And this is with the back drop of off shoring work to low cost low skill centers.

The true nature and culture of a company rises to the surface as it’s difficult to mask the warts.

I’m sure the are companies worse than ExxonMobil but you’d be hard pressed in this current environment.

Wait until oil prices go back down to the 40's. Everyone is happy now that they got their biggest raise in 15 years.

I have worked at several Fortune 500 companies and at Exxon for 10+ years. I think the pros of working at Exxon exceed most companies. They pay good, good benefits, and possible career paths. The problem is the cons. They are fewer but major. Think of a loving husband who provides and takes care of his family. He only has one issue and that is he mo---t his daughter. That is a description of Exxon. At their core character they are an unethical company. Over the last few years instead of just laying off people the we-ponized the ranking system and proceeded to eliminate 8% of the work force by telling them they needed significant improvement. They basically set the format to make managers lie to their employees. Many people who were near retirement and were protected from dismissal were given positive feedback then ranked NSI. This prevented getting raises and impacted pension payout. Employees are necessary evils and I believe Exxon spends time figuring how to get rid of us or replace with cheaper employees. If you are new to Exxon you will never see a pension because they will either run you off or you will quit.

OP … in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king. Sorry you and @xqs are so naive and have to navigate the corporate world you find yourself in with extra service animals to make certain you don’t get blind sided by the reality, if you could only see.

@OP Lol…ya think?

My takeaway from what I’ve seen posted here is that EM is made up of a bunch of closet s-xists and racists with a massive sense of entitlement and grievance.

The true toxicity is beneath the surface and heavily entrenched in the management ranks. If you don’t see it you’re not paying attention…
