Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

How can someone stay here for 20 years?

Wow. Kudos to them. All the long term employees here are heroes to me, because I've only been here for a little over a year and I've already had enough of everything.
There is no way that I will be able to last until the end of this year, I am actively looking for a new job. I'm really interested in how someone managed to stay here not only ten, but 20 years?

Agree with your post! I started looking for another job after almost 10 years. The mail in the coffin for me was when they started the new team scheduling and basically disregard my availability I had and shift I worked after almost 10 years. They were not willing to work with me at all. That is how they value loyal long term employees at Walmart. I started looking and landed this job outside of retail and am so very thankful for. My manger treats me with respect and says how great of a job I am doing. Amazing being recognized and feels good. Worked at Walmart for 10 years and was never told we value your hard or you doing a great job. It’s a toxic work environment. Walmart doesn’t care about its employees. Everyone is disposable and nothing but a WIN number. I’m glad everything happened the way it did it lead me to this wonderful job and I am extremely thankful. Sad that it took me so long to realize to get out. All those years of dedication and hard work meant nothing to Walmart. Can’t dwell on that though what is important is that I am out of there as well as others that took that leap and worked out for them. I too no longer shop there.

@1wwa: you are spot on, my friend. Walmart was a completely different company before 2005. Then the street wanted more profit, more dividends and higher stock price. After Sam died, there was no one with his vision to pick up and push back against the street. Perhaps it was inevitable, but the truth is, you pretty much got it right.

Once you put in a couple of years, another year doesn't matter. Then another....another. That is how people get to 20 years.

This is what is really happening with the long term employees. They started back the day when Walmart was a decent company, that treated their employees with decency and respect and offered some really good benefits. You also received merit increases back then (not the cr---y 2% increases offered to all lower level employees now. That is why some of these guys are working in the Fitting Room and making $20.00 an hour . . . It was a steady job, that you could depend on; you could buy a home and a car and provide for your family. Full time actually meant full time hours back then. As they stayed in their positions and aged, the working environment changed and since they were making pretty good money, they decided to tough it out. But, every year just got worse, until you wake up one morning, and you can't stand the working environment anymore, but you are now a whole lot older, and not really marketable anymore -- so you are trapped. It took me a lot of years to figure this out, and every one I talk to with longevity, describes the same scenario. Sadly, they are now being pushed out the door, like all those years of dedication means absolutely nothing. I left my position at Walmart a number of years ago, and I refuse to shop there anymore. I just saw way too much ugliness and lack of respect for their employees.

Stores are not the same. The programs you still deal with like everyone else. Total nightmare if you are a manager.

Not all stores are the same - some are better than others etc. Some ppl are liked more for various reasons (not just strong work ethic either..) and promoted etc... If you can make it to SL or SM in a store that bonuses a lot (max or supermax) save much of that huge bonus money and fully fund that 401k you may be able to retire early..
