Question for April 2022 SIRP-ees regarding health care

For Any SIRPED employees who have gone off the 9 month health benefits, or preparing to go off the 18 month COBRA health benefits.

Have you had luck getting policies on the ACA and exchanges if you’re retired and too young for Medicare yet?
Did you get a policy thru a salesman or pick something online from the ACA exchange?
Has your policy accommodated and pre-existing conditions?

Thanks

Sign up for healthcare directly through the healthcare.gov exchange. You do not need viabenefits, they will only confuse things. However, I'm told you cannot use your HRA money AND tax credits because the government views this as double dipping. Does anyone have documentation showing BOTH HRA and Tax Credits are allowed?

@2PUZ

Thanks for the pointer. So for us November 2022 retirees our cobra expires next May. If I call BCBS and sign up, from next May to November, do you know if my deductible resets.

And did your deductible double from $7k employee/spouse total to $7k each individual deductible?
Was the monthly premium close to what you were paying under Cobra?

It sounds like an enticing option. Thanks in advance.

If you know which healthcare insurance you want to use, you can call them directly and enroll with them rather than going through Via or ACA. That's how I enrolled in my BCBS coverage.

Yes, heathcare.gov aka Obamacare.

What is ACA? Are referring to heathcare.gov? (Currently I am using Via Benefits)

I went with the ACA policy after Cobra. I was able to get an ACA subsidy the following year and was able to use money Ford put in my HRA to pay premiums. I was a late bloomer hired in after 2008 so no pension/medical in retirement.

I went through a broker who's commission was based on if I signed up for a policy. He searched ACA and a non-government funded site for an optimal policy given my price range and an acceptable deductible that I could live with. Given my situation it worked out by not going for a policy through ACA.
