Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Where would you be without us?

GenX and Millennials can’t wait to get us out of XOM. I can’t understand why. You’d be nothing without us sharing our operational knowledge. You say it’s “your time” but remember that sooner or later the next generation will say the same for you. Have some respect.

I am a Millenial and am cannot believe some of these posts. Several people are blaming boomers for everything wrong in the world, I beg to differ. A lot of Millenial's give lip service about the problems but are unwilling to change there lifestyle or habits to effect change. So many in my age group are terribly wasteful, will not give up the cars, high dollar life style, eating beef, very little if any recycling. Do not see the problem of asking mom and dad for money to keep up their life style and pay for college. Social issues? A whole basket full of problems they cannot come to some type of agreement on(no one ever gets 100% their way) Changes from the previous generation you are complaining about: we no longer have mandatory draft, it's all voluntary. Women's rights have come along way from the past, as have minority rights from the Civil Rights era, although we have more to accomplish. Social programs to help the poor, grants for college, NASA and the space program, big advances in the medical field, especially for cancer and you are benefitting from these things. (the list goes on) Some of you only look at the bad and blame boomers for everything wrong with your life. Nothing is ever going to be perfect or always be your way all the time. Try doing something good/positive for the world, no matter how small it may be.

For all the Millenial's and Gen X,Y that understand, you are the assets for a better future for everyone on this planet.

I'm a millennial and can say this person is just stupid and foolish. Please can we PIP this type of ignorance from the company?

Are you trolling, or stoopid enough to actually believe that Fox News drivel you just vomited all over us? If it’s the latter, you’re the reason everyone hates boomers

@1zbq Cool story.

Boomers have been running the world since the 1970s, therefore (as a group) you own everything that’s currently wrong with it. Nearly everything that you listed can be directly traced to failed public or private sector policies put in place by Boomers.

Again, don’t let the door hit you on the way out 😉

@1vhj - “Boomers (as a group, not as individuals) have left a legacy of catastrophic climate change, endless/ wars, pandemics, monumental public debt, political dysfunction,”

Well let’s see.

1 - Considering that CO2 only makes up 0.04% of the atmosphere, I would say that the extent of humanity’s contribution to “climate change” is still unproven.

2 - I don’t think you can blame any one country’s “boomer” generation for “endless wars”. Wars can be instigated by almost any country and not all countries had a “boomer” generation (only really the USA, Canada and Europe).

3 - Which specific “pandemics” are you thinking of ? Asian Flu ? Swine Flu (H2N2) ? Bird Flu (SARS) ? COVID-19 ? How are any of these the fault of the boomer generation ? What could they have done to stop them ? The only one suspected to be man-made is COVID-19, and that came from China (who don’t have a “boomer” generation) ?

4 - “Monumental public debt” ? That’s based on successive failed government policies dating from pre-boomer years to current administrations. The vast majority of boomers hate the idea of living on credit or living with debt. If you’re thinking of recent credit bubbles being burst, you really should be looking at Generation X.

5 - “Political dysfunction” ? Well, you don’t have to look any further than the current administration in the US for a textbook example of a dysfunctional political body, an ineffective President with severe cognitive disabilities, a corrupt media system protecting a “cult of personality” and which is piling on the debt for future generations with record government borrowing and social assistance programs. By and large, the boomers didn’t vote for this administration - you’d have to blame Generation X’er and mostly the millennials !

You’re welcome for the history lesson and correcting your many misunderstandings 😊

Same reason we want boomer politicians to go. Make room for the next generation. Let them have some opportunities and promotions. Go enjoy your Harley and RV.

I think about boomers the same way I think about ExxonMobil — there are a lot of good people within the ranks, but we would all be better off if the situation was different.

1wkn+1bFW8Y5A. I agree. I've had a lot of mentoring and help from "Boomers" in my life and it has really helped me. The arrogance and lack of respect on a couple of posters is disgusting. I wonder where they were educated both on an academic level and a personal/social level. To all the "Boomers" that have helped me along...hats off to you!

I don’t like the title of this posting, I don’t think one generation owes to another. However, I have to say that I’ve been taken aback at the vulgar and gratuitous attacks that I’ve seen very often on this time from younger people against “boomers”.
A quarter century ago, when I started with Exxon, there were a lot of people around from the older generation but there never was this attitude of confrontation, lack of respect and arrogance that I see in the younger generation today. There was a lot of eagerness to learn from their experience, and insulting and looking down at them would have been ridiculous and self-defeating.

I have to agree the boomer generation has been an unmitigated disaster.

@cwh said the following:

“All generations hope to improve the lives of their children and boomers have done so in leaps and bounds”.

This is self-evident B.S.

Boomers (as a group, not as individuals) have left a legacy of catastrophic climate change, endless/ wars, pandemics, monumental public debt, political dysfunction,…I could go on for days. No reasonable person would look at the world of today and say it is a better place for future generations. Fortunately for the rest of us, the Boomers are retiring and/or passing away of natural causes in large numbers, so those of us who remain can get to work solving some of the massive problems the Boomers have left us with.

Again, don’t let the door hit you on the way out 😁

“And though their current wealth has been dragged down by not one but two “once-in-a-lifetime” economic crises during their most impactful career years, Millennials stand to inherit over $68 trillion from Baby Boomer parents by the year 2030, setting them up to potentially be the most wealthy generation in U.S. history.”

Let me get this right…Millennials are complains about Boomers?

NARC. Clearly trying to cause division in the workforce. Boomers and millenials both got the short end of the stick with layoffs and pips at this company. Focus on the real problem... decisions made at the top.

Such childish responses. To sit and badmouth boomers, really? All generations hope to improve the lives of their children and boomers have done so in leaps and bounds compared to what their parents were able to do for them. Grow up.

Some of these responses could sound like they're being made by petulant teenagers complaining that their new BMW is the wrong series and they have the worst life in the world. Yes, you're welcome for inventing the internet for you to whine on and providing the energy to accomplish every single thing in your life. Don't worry about it, I'm sure you'll immediately donate any inheritance you get from your boomer grandparents to the nearest homeless shelter vs. spending it on yourselves.

Grow up.

@OP The planet is overheating. Democracies across the world are imperiled. Sea levels are rising. Buildings and bridges are collapsing. We’re just starting to emerge from the worst pandemic in 100 years.

And this is all just in the past week.

I think it’s safe to say that the Boomers have done a lousy job. Thankfully they’re all aging out of power and will die of natural causes soon, so those of us still alive can fix the mess your generation made.

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out 😆

OP is right.
Infantile responses expose a lot about your inner selves. Remember this when you are in this boat, because you will be.
Of course then your opinion will be different.
