Do people at VMware think it was better under Dell? I know it was better prior to the Dell/EMC merger as VMware was pretty much left to its own devices.

Who cares who makes the list, the only thing that matters is Hock forces the creation of lists, including replacing the “leaders”who created this mess and puts in proper systems and processes. Random selection is sufficient to create the list, all you need is an excel spreadsheet. If you think sucking up to the leaders will help you, you are wrong imho.
Sir, the point is Hock removes the incompetence. Welcome to the future.
Sure, Jan.
Who do you think it making the lists of people to lay off?
An independent council of outsiders, or the managers and BU leadership who want their empire to grow?

Reading comprehension, sir. The incompetence is claimed to be IN the company.

That is the best explanation I’ve seen here of how we are in this mess. We have our useless professional class leaders to thank for getting us in this mess.
I’m old enough to remember the joke, “well at least we aren’t Computer Associates” in terms of the sad old tech they were selling vs “our company” - not necessarily VMware tech since CA was the company to trash no matter where you worked.
Now VMware is the next generation’s CA, amazingly with Hock Tab behind both acquisitions. Rank and file employees aren’t to blame, VMware created this mess and we had to call the “cleaner” (think John Wick) and that is never pretty - but it is effective.
Such a pointless question…
VMware should have never sold 85% of itself to EMC in 2004 - that’s where this whole mess really started.
Incompetence is rife throughout.
It will need a tsunami of change that only Hoc can bring.
That's because the culling will be indiscriminate.
Your thesis makes a lot of sense, yet those three sentences bring cognitive dissonance.
If there is ample incompetence, and the tsunami of change will be indiscriminate, the outcome will be random and the overall benefit to the company from massive changes may not be realized.
This is the best thing to happen for VMware. Not for its employees though. We have reached a point in our evolution where the system can longer be fixed. Incompetence is rife throughout. It will need a tsunami of change that only Hoc can bring. This will certainly unlock more shareholder value. No doubt in my mind. The folks at the helm are not d-mb. They know what is good for the company. And that is unfortunately not good news for employees - good and bad. That's because the culling will be indiscriminate.
Raghu is a 3rd choice at best and probably the worst choice for that level of leadership.

Dell is a vampire remora. It sucks money & cachet out of companies.
Could it be that no other qualified people wanted the job?
(And, no, the EUC guy would've been terrible.)
The only thing I wished Michael Dell and the board of directors had done is articulate a clear CEO succession plan. Raghu is a 3rd choice at best and probably the worst choice for that level of leadership. He clearly is intelligent and has an amazing memory, but these traits are hardly enough to inspire the company.
VMware leadership has always prioritized keeping its head in the sand no matter who was the financial backer. I think what I want is leadership with a spine. Spine to define a clear direction, fire underperformers, and make hard decisions that actually benefit the business. This company has basically had no innovation or direction since VSAN. Bad acquisitions and even worse ecosystem management and allowing these acquisitions to act as vassal states rather than fully enveloping them in the business and culture has developed into a beast with no direction. Each BU pulls for their own self interests rather than a unified platform and all our customers know it’s a sh-t show.
Would not be better off.

vmware would continue to hire cheap people with H1 visas, and eventually customers would stop buying because the trajectory of the software quality would warrant looking for other opportunities.
Also, will not be better off being sold to a venture capital firm like Broadcom.
