Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Just how many tasks will be moved to Bangalore after all?

Each all hands those group photos there are getting bigger and bigger.

The IBM outsourcing playbook.
IBM is an American company with majority of the employees working outside America.

It is the most insane idea to think we can effectively have tech dev or manufacturing engineering working in low-cost geo, they belong at the fab sites like every other company does. The head of technology dev I thought was going to be a good leader but has turned into a total failure, just another yes man and no thinking about the implications for future. Another SLT member contributing to the ship sinking!!

"Hello and thank you for calling GF, this is Ajeet Mundabiwabi, would you like to place a hold lot or code a tool down?"

@4emx absolutely correct. If you are working from home, then your job is 100% a target to move to low-cost geos!! First, they will sell you some line on helping train new team members in low-cost geos then eventually they will reward you for training with laying you off!! How you stop this is don't train anyone from low-cost geos, forbid to do it!!!!

If a job can be done off site then it is almost certainly in the crosshairs for offshoring. Don't trust naive line managers or greedy +L10s that say otherwise.

@1srx the PDK team has been destroyed compared to what it used to be in the past. Once the flag ship team of the industry when at IBM to now a follower group who is full of newbies in low-cost geos doing absolutely nothing for leadership. Of course, we reward that behavior by promoting people to SVP who do nothing useful technically but just outsource jobs. The amazing thing is the PDK won't ever be benchmarked against other companies because we are so far behind at this point, don't expose things. Leaders with no vision other than reducing costs are destroying GF!!

If you start having team members from Bangalore or Bulgaria appear on your team and or you are asked to “teach and train,” one how to do what you do as “back-up,” stop what you are doing and update your resume and start applying for a new job ASAP. Such events are indicators that your time at GF now has an expiration date. Ask the PDK teams how training their “backs-up,” went?

It will keep happening until the headcount cost targets are met. It is not just Bangalore, Sofia/Bulgaria is a main outsource site as well since even cheaper than Bangalore. TB advisor to CEO is driving this short-sighted strategy, considers engineers a widget which can be replaced globally with no impact accounting for skill, experience, etc .....
