Does anyone know how much longer underwriters will be around for before it’s all automated? Is it a dead end job? I’ve heard it’s hard to get out of that department.

Underwriting is a circus and like claims, it’s very difficult to get out of the department. I wouldn’t suggest it.
Agree with the person who said Underwriting is like North Korea. They are pushing reps to Chat so they can handle 3 chats/different agent offices at one time. Word is right now the reps are being moved to dedicated chat only but sometime in 2022 they will be expected to handle chat and phones at the same time. Dont be surprised if leadership relax the metrics because you are on the phone with one office, while doing chat for 3 other different offices.

You know It’s really bad when you work for a company that expects low wage employees to coach, and correct one another with minimal management involvement. this place is the epitome of it’s someone else’s job.
I know your post was about underwriting but this sounds like it could fit in with any entry level dept.
I’m the op about the 10-20 years comment, I’m here to argue either. We live in a society don’t take this any political way I’m just drawing a battle line. You have people that would fall on the left who lack education and are clearly low IQ’d, and you have people on the right, too good for their own good.
Once you start filling in spots with the left, the right obviously want what’s best for themselves, so when competitors are offering way better life styles. We’re stuck with stupidity, and now the government watching us more than ever.
I would say the best thing you could ever do is never stop learning because all of State Farm may no longer exist, even worse Geico has one up on us with government contracts and connections. h–l it’s in the name abreviated, LOL.
I would just say to be surprised is someone who can be easily fooled with the way things are heading.
State Farm is taking that big brother approach now of automation, insurance companies brag how regulated they are in reality, over charging young adults who can’t afford to wreck a car. dealing with the average person of age 40 who will wreck/total 2-4 in a year is their target audience according to commercials and my daily interaction in claims.
Society is getting woke, and the government is moving closer towards socialized healthcare/insurance in sure insurance and how we know it will no longer be the same in 10-20 years.
I’m not doubting that claims training is a joke; I’m simply saying don’t assume that underwriting training is a walk in the park. You may think that a year of training leaves you well prepared, but you really only just scratch the surface because there is so much to learn and things are constantly changing. And it takes a long time to grasp the programs they use because the technology is so out of date. It’s like going back to the 1980’s.
@1sjk come on over to claims where we give you a few weeks of half-assed training, throw you onto the phones and start performance managing you a month later because you are not hitting your metrics.
Don’t go in thinking the training will be easy, because it’s not. It’s miserable. You will be treated like a k-d in school and you will constantly have tests you have to take, worksheets you have to complete, daily group activities, observations that you have to pass, demonstrate various things in front of the class, etc. It is a LONG year. I hated every minute of it.
A year of training? I'll take it ans then retire. Thanks for the information.
As someone who was once in underwriting, I would never suggest someone to take a job in that department unless they were desperate. The programs they use are seriously so outdated and behind the times it's ridiculous. You will spend a year just on training alone when you get into underwriting and the procedures and rules constantly change.
Customer service will be its downfall. They operate under the umbrella "for the customer" which is korporate Kool Aid aka lies.
@jtb it is but unfortunately it is being replaced by a computer program. I have no illusion that if/when they can replace me with a chat bot and a computer program claims will be next.
Underwriting is still better than claims by a country mile.

In some states agents cant even call in anymore, they are forced to use chat. My guess is that it UW will still be around for close to 5-8 years. Technology enterprise cant even migrate Personal and business lines to ECRM.
They will be around for at least five more years (if not more). They can’t get new policy admin system rolled out to any personal lines products and keep pushing the date out for the first state. It’s out now in business lines and it gets horrible feedback from agents.
