Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

how's RTO going

A few weeks passed since RTO started. What's the gossip on that? How much are you and your colleagues complying with it? Are some people cheating? Any tips or tricks to share? Is HR or real estate collecting data on badge swipes and time sheets?

Genuinely curious. Why is RTO so difficult for Schwab?

What makes CS different that there is so much push back?

The company I work at (office tue-thur) and most others cope fine.

@1rpo+1qI8vyoy yes, cheap terrible coffee is about the only perk they didn't rip away. From what Green was used to, at least.

I got used to drinking great pour overs, lattes at home. Now I am in the office looking at stained coffee machine that hasnt been cleaned in ages. I started interviewing. Not a big fan of RTO

"Is it corporate real estate values or occupancy tax relief or some other somewhat valid reason, just be honest. But they won't. The royalty doesn't consider us worthy of a real answer."

Individually, some members of the EC are honest, on occasion at least. They believe that in person is better than remote and to justify the real estate costs that they need to be at 75% occupancy. They are convinced that they will be able to hire adequate replacements for anyone who doesn't want to get on board with that. And they'd prefer to get this transitional period over with as quickly as possible so they can stabilize the culture, but they know '24 will be rough. Just business to them.

Commuting 7+ hours for 3 days in the office, I am spending almost a full workday commuting, not counting all the sh-t I have to do to get ready for work, get my kids out the door, manage pet arrangements, etc.

It's 2024 and not only do we not have flying cars, we have out of touch elites forcing us to burn fuel and priceless time to sit in an office where I will still connect to a web call because nobody on my team is in my location. Not one person.

So please spare me the complete bullsh-t this is for team building or whatever their feeble minded reason was, it's either a known lie or we are governed by imbeciles. No other option.

Is it corporate real estate values or occupancy tax relief or some other somewhat valid reason, just be honest. But they won't. The royalty doesn't consider us worthy of a real answer.

Charles Schwab loves the planet, they promote green initiatives, we are a family, LMFAO.

It's a giant waste of time and money. It destroys the planet. We get less done.

And inflation. Has your pay kept up with gas (just wait until the middle east fully lights up), groceries, car repairs, clothing, utilities, or anything? How about the $3 can of soda from the coffee shop on campus?

Going broke already and now I need to burn a few hundred dollars more a month on gas and almost 30 hours a month sitting in traffic.

It's 2024 folks, yet here we are living like it's 1984.

Loyalty gone. Caring gone. Schwab is already sitting in the graveyard, they just don't know it.

Wake up. Be bold. Lead the way into the future. Steer the industry into the next millennium. Shake off the dusty and decaying shell of 20th century management philosophies that will only lose to the next generation already taking your seat.

At least half my team is actively searching for jobs, there is not a single person I have encountered that is happier or more productive.

But keep in mind: this is their design. This is exactly what they want. Squeeze your employees to quit and they don’t pay severance. Empty platitudes about “how every company is doing it” are meaningless and hide their true motives.

Let's ask question differently .
What if TDA employee count equivalent +5% would have left job .
Would Schwab have done the layoff?
Or
Even have done the RTO?
probably NO

I talked to an EC member at a mixer. They plan to start cracking down on remote work exceptions akin to what big tech and others are doing. Get to an office, relocate or you'll be let go.

RTO is a babysitting service. Most people don't have team members at their location so driving to work and wasting 10+ hours of your life away from your family is something out of touch elitists CEOs do

My manager is 1000 miles away and my team is spread out all over. But hey Walt says I get to gossip in the cafeteria so it's required

Senior leaders need to be gutted from this company

RTO is nothing but,

  1. Force employee whom you do not like to leave
  2. Most of people who come office
  3. to find some blame for there failure
  4. They are debt , so they pay off
  5. to gossip and backstab

The gossip? There's plenty. Walk to any break room and that's all people are talking about. Walk down any aisle where people are congregating and odds are they are talking about RTO or layoffs.

I haven't heard a single person that is happy or tout any benefit. RTO was sold as increasing collaboration, but I've not seen any of that. Everyone is at their desk on a teams call even if they are on the same team in the same location.

Distractions are sky high. Higher than pre-pandemic.

My team is missing deadlines and project timelines are slipping. In our recent retro we dove into causes and we are convinced this is due to RTO and the decreased productivity associated with commuting and being in the office.

Badge swipes are being monitored and any exit without badge readers are being locked down. Big brother-esque signs are being posted warning employees to always badge in and never tailgate into the building.

So I'd say it's going exactly as we expected.

I just hope the executive council is getting exactly what they wanted, too.
