Brown nosing is becoming an Olympic sport

I know most of us have witnessed brown nosing at EM, but lately, in my group, it’s been epic.

After DW sent that nonsensical video announcing the survey results to us all, my supervisor & manager held a discussion specific to our group’s responses (so much for anonymous). Apparently, they could see all the comments from people in their group, but no identifying information. Needless to say, some responses were easy to identify.

In this meeting we were asked to review the areas we scored low, and come up with tangible solutions. Not only did most people disagree with the low responses, they couldn’t understand how anyone saw the company as anything but inclusive, collaborative, and innovative even though the results were specifically from our group.

Many clutched their pearls, and dished out the BS pretty thick. It was so cringe worthy, I almost laughed. I was both horrified and impressed at the lengths they were willing to go in order to lift up management and support the “all is well” facade. It is very sad that we have come to this.

The company is asking us to come up with ideas and solutions for improvement based on the survey results. The crazy thing is, they already have all that information. In the survey comments (and in many other ways throughout the years), we have relayed what wasn’t working and ideas on what can be done to improve. They just aren’t listening and they do not care.

What a waste of time, money and energy.

@1qym+1i44aosF - Looks like you may be one of the brown nosers. I am sure it’ll pay off for you soon.

BTW….You can turn the brown nosing off while at this site. Unlike the EM survey, this site is anonymous.

The most pathetic are relatively new hires who are not sponsored. They clung to the belief that somehow, if they bend over and give up any dignity they will make it in the new EM. No, you little spineless things, if you’re not sponsored you have no career at EM and you’re just filling a position until your low-cost replacement can take over. Zero dignity, maximum bend over, no gain.

OP, you are obviously right.
Look at somebody like @1qym+1i44aosF, who feels the need to brown nose even here, on an anonymous site where he’s getting no credit for his lack of backbone.

The response rate was low but not that low. It was around 65%.

“Not only did most people disagree with the low responses…”

Most people didn’t respond to the survey. Heard across EMPS, only 4,000 responses out of >20K employees. Could debate both sides of the aisle around the low response rate.

OP is a perfect example of the problem. OP expects someone else to solve the problem. OP gave his input on how to fix it and is waiting to hear back. Hey OP why don’t you make changes to improve th situation? Develop an empowered rather than a victim attitude.

It’s a failure of the most senior leaders of this corporation of which I’m specifically for the survey to be sent out under the disguise of “we want to hear from you, your feedback, and where we need to improve” and then the survey be specifically focused on WeAreExxonMobil behaviors. Now the poor managers and supervisors are having to assess and evaluate what their team can and is willing to commit to while the MC and Presidents and HR don’t truly evaluate the feedback that was specifically targeted to them. What a shame. Shame shame on you DW, KM, and TG.

I really wonder how these people who claim to be leaders live with themselves. This process brings out the worst traits of these individuals. Purely sinful.

“Brown nosing is becoming an Olympic sport”.

Brown-nosing and mutual-st-----g define the industry.

Move along, nothing to see here.

We've had so many resignations in my section since the survey that it'll be easy just to palm off every comment to one of those that have left! 😁

Management is just setting you up for a future performance rating drop. They will claim that you are not a "cultural fit" and put you in the NI/NSI bucket at the end of the year.

Just drink the "Kool Aid" and check the box.

It does not matter what your "cultural fit" is. If management wants to put you in an NI/NSI silo, they will think of something over the 12-month performance cycle. That is why the system was changed so that we can drop from the top 10% to the bottom 10% in 12 months or less.

Under the old system, if you were in the top 10%, it would take three years to drop you to the bottom 10%. You could only drop by 1/3 each year unless the V.P. approved and even then you could only drop 2/3 with V.P. approval.

Here's some advice. Anytime you see an email from corporate leadership or HR. Hit the delete button and move on with your life. Will do wonders for your mental health.
