Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Sorry to hear so many of you are unhappy!

I guess I’m one of the few long term employees that have had a rewarding career.
Imperial allowed me to pay off my house at 44, see much of North America, work remotely as required and participate in a lot of world class training. I have a net worth over $2 million after years of investing, dividend collection, company matching savings plan accumulation and salary increases. Zero debt. Pension collection wikl start this year. My kids received $20,000 each for tuition, taxed in their names, not mine. They all have perfect teeth from the $2500 company contributions of low cost dental program. We have a home gym with monies coming from Imperial’s wellness program. I have never paid a cell phone bill or internet bill in my life!

In every role I took, I tried to recreate it to ensure my passion continued and the company benefited.
I made the choice to be a positive driving force and did not get caught up in the constant negativity. When at QP it’s easy to see that the young population likes to leave at 430 every day because they feel they aren’t being paid for more and they can’t figure out why they aren’t promoted. I took the ranking process very seriously and documented my performance throughout the year. Magically I ranked well.

I don’t have drinking buddies at work, belong to an ‘old boys club’ or feel I’m in a racist organization.
I guess I just got ‘lucky’. The grass isn’t always greener. You will find out when you get there!

And how much brown nosing did you have to do, you weak, pathetic soul. It takes a loser to brag about brown nosing riches on this site.

Must be fake. Only $2 million net worth after 40 years of service? Must be a troll who doesn’t know the average salary at Imperial.

Because of pigs like you Imperial got to this stage. What a shame. There could be dozens like this pig working for IO

If you retired from IOL with a net worth of 10M, that would be worth boasting about. Anything less means you were a middling employee.

It took you till 44 to pay off your house? What took so long?

Your "success" standards aren't very high.

Good for you sir. You either never worked for a toxic boss in your career or you are guilty of being one. Skim through the forum and you'll find enough posts highlighting the toxic culture and dysfunctional leadership. If you are still around, take a peek into subsurface and you'll find newly coronated bosses drunk with power and laziness. Promoting toxic bosses who are technically unfit to lead a team and amateur supervisors who are incapable of assessing technical work and s— up to people of power, will cost good employees to lose motivation towards the job they once loved. It's a reflection of deep-rooted insecurity and failure in the leadership ranks. Brown-nosing, manipulation and being friends with your bosses takes precedence over good performance and those who don't toe this line will likely face the heat. Good luck with your 2M$

The joke is this delusional psychopath thinking his “accomplishments” are worth posting for the world to see...and just because he wanted to make those who were laid off feel small.

I paid off my 630k home by 34, and I don’t think it’s all that much of an accomplishment.

Before you brag about your achievements, you better be sure it’s something worth bragging about.

OP is likely a white male who’s lucky to have a pension because he obviously can’t manage money if 40 years of service translates to 2M net worth.

Actually, consumers like you are growing my investment portfolio, so keep it up!

It's interesting that people (annuitant and manager of sort) seek out layoff forums to post gloating c-ap like this.

"sorry to hear so many of you are unhappy" sounds more like "yeah, don't give a rat's a– others are suffering as long as I am happy".

The OP's msg seems to ring the same tone from management forums post layoff. We didn't put a knife on your throat for those long hours and taking calls in the weekends / vacations. Look where it got me, me and my nice promotions. The fact that they are not laying off bad performers, but rather positions that was created recently + recent hires makes you wonder on management short sighted decisions.

For the annuitant, you are probably one of the lucky ones that sold most of your IOL shares before it tanked, if you see who's driving the ship these days, we are following the path of Sears.

No doubt about that. He didn't mentioned about his house price that he paid off at 44. It can be $ 150 K house if he bought 25 yrs ago. He made a gym at home by wellness money for his whole family. Never paid phone and internet bills. Which shows how miserable life he leads to save money.
You can understand what he can do for his job. Maybe he can give good lectures about so called diversification, falsifying anything to show how he overcome his disabilities, his pretending pictures can be in the QP big monitor, his holding handrail ability, phishing email checking ability (Imperial illiterates (based on leadership) Manager are very serious about that!), he doesn't talk by his cell while walking in the QP pipelines, his pretending abilities and all BS activities to make his bosses happy. This are the criteria's for high ranking not actual job. I am pretty sure his stakeholders has mixed ( I wouldn't say bad!) feelings about him.

He’s a psychopath, one of many in IMO. You’ll find most of them in management.

Who’s smarter? Someone who hit 2M net worth with 15 years or someone who had to spend 30-40 years with IMO?

I believe he is a representative from puppet management. He is enjoying his time while all company assets and employees are in deep sh–. His mentality reflect Imperial. A cheap guy who never paid for his internet ( I don't know how), misused company's property has come here to provide lectures.

Are you tone-deaf management? You went to a layoff site to boast about getting to retirement. Did you also use a magnifying glass to torture insects as a child?

I'm glad to hear that you had a great experience at IOL and am happy for you. Most of the people in this forum including me probably started with high hopes, dedication and energy, only to learn very soon that it takes more than just good performance to succeed here. I used to work for 11-12hrs everyday with good performance record, but one toxic boss was all it took to get booted out. Imagine having to work under an inexperienced, lazy, technically incompetent and insecure narcissistic boss who cannot communicate anything clearly yet steals credit for your work. Promoting such people to leadership role is detrimental to workforce productivity, culture and employee satisfaction. Trying to fight it only made me realize that the system cannot be fixed by the same system that promotes such people. I was genuinely happy when I was let go because now I can invest my time and energy on a job that cares and is worth caring for as well. Happy retirement.

Not everyone can retire from IOL. Recently, people that worked over 15 years for the company and in their mid-40s are laid off. I am sure these people were hoping for a retirement from the company, and send their kids to school on the company. They spent the prime of their lifes with the company, and are now kicked out the street like yesterday's garbage - count yourself lucky that you get to retire from IOL.

So, who paid your cell phone and internet bills? Maybe you and your family misuse Company’s cell phone for personal use. What about internet? I never heard that Imperial ever pay employees home internet. Something wrong with you. Maybe you used company’s cell phone as tethering for home internet. A guys like you can do anything for million dollar savings. You are still at Imperial. That’s why this company is going down and down and collapsing.

Great comments! (from a current annuitant). Don’t be dissuaded by all this negativity. When you retire from this great company, you can reflect on all the fun memories you had and all the highly intelligent people you had the opportunity to work with. My golf buddies do it all the time. Oh and the pension is always in your bank account on time. (They don’t tell you but sometimes they actually increase it even though it’s not an indexed pension)

I always laughed when the people that didn’t do well always felt they were so much smarter than others in the organization. A lot of ‘poor me’ syndrome.

Your $2 million net worth is likely understated with any of the IOL pension options but hey, it’s ok to be in the top 2% of Canadians!

Enjoy your well deserved retirement. We certainly are!

If you’re kids are in post-secondary, I estimate your age to be late 40s to early 50s. If your net worth at that stage is ~2M, you’re doing something wrong. Were you heavily invested in IMO?

Net worth over $2 million? That's why Imperial is in loss every quarter and making less compare to competitors. Are you from middle Management? As far I remembered, Company used to pay way lower even 12/14 yrs ago. That's the problem. All of the oil companies are reducing salaries from executive level to keep the work force. However, Imperial upper management didn't reduced their salaries only fired employees. They will fire more in future as they will get more. Neither they care about Company's assets nor they care about employees.

By the way, try to teach some foreign languages to your kids by Imperial money. As they have to go to overseas / BTC for cheap labor job. You and your greedy management ruin this country.

You are not recent experienced hire and from visible minorities. So, you won't understand the problem. FYI, most of the laid of employees are more efficient and smarter than you and worked for longer hours. Due to baseless studies (recent hired, high salary and less package money and visible minorities (unofficially)), Company let these folks go. Yes, this place is good for pretender and useless cultural folks. I don't know what is the job of that useless Upstream Cultural Transformation Manager? He is also getting good salary and benefit like you. Please provide your random baseless advise somewhere else and you can always delegate for puppet management inside Imperial. Wait and see. Next time they will catch and fire past hired too. By the way, I see many young folks worked till night and don't leave the office at 4:30 pm. If someone start to work at 7 am or before , he can leave the office at 4: 30 pm unless he is a dumb a–. Yes, all dumb a– work more than 50 hrs (for 40 hrs job) always unless there is any project requirement or emergency issue (certain time only). Incompetent need to work more always.

Well, good for you. When you joined, there weren't BSCs where they shipped work to.

You also must have a good "sponsor" to help you rank well - that makes a significant difference in your experience with IOL. The rank group (e.g. org unit) where you are ranked also play a significant factor on where you will be ranked - some groups are more competitive than others.....
