@3niz+1kOAOGr3 Should be laid off because you legitimately cannot read or you pay zero attention to words right in front of your face that have been repeated multiple times

Did they give extra severance for time at VMware, example working there 10 years verse 1 year?

I know someone from legal who got laid off on Thurs but their official layoff day was Monday. 4 months plus 1 week for every year of tenure.

What I’ve heard. Is that the current RIFs are only for the under performing “needs improvement” group of folks. The main RIFs are yet to come , mid Feb I think.

" exactly. Worked for the entire year and then get laid off with no bonus! Sounds very bad/unfair."

Actually its timing genius. WARN act requires 60 days notice. Bonus if April 15.
If they get rid of you prior to Feb 15/16th you aren't even in the WARN act time frame which would probably make the bonus a requirement.

Instead, they know what the end of the qtr/year numbers will look like in January, with a pretty good degree of certainty. So do your layoff now, BEFORE WARN kicks them into territory that they may have to pay Bonus. That is how scrooge McDuck would do it.

"Usually they have given annual bonus as part of severance during the january layoffs. But not this time. That's bad for the impacted folks."

To me that was always sketchy. You mean the bonus is for last year's performance... You're laying me off 7 days before end of fiscal year, and now I dont get my bonus.

Super Sketch. but makes sense. Somehow you have to have enough cash to bonus all the VPs and Directors

@1gvw+1kOAOGr3

Typically they have planned RIF. In the past managers have been told the date so they can rif someone vs straight up firing due to performance. This ensures you get a package vs being fired and getting none.

Source: many directors have told me over my tenure at VMW when I asked why certain people got let go in areas not impacted broadly.

So yours could be that they don't have budget for the headcount or performance sadly.

Highly doubt either of those unless you are vp level. I don't think in the past six years I have ever seen them pay out bonuses from severance but I could be wrong.

If you are redundant, a “leader” with no direct reports, collect large sums of money to perform minimal work - you are at risk. Having worked in a couple roles at VMware, I can say there are far too many layers of sales people. Additionally, people in DMT, revenue, billing ops, success executives (not talking desk), all perform little to no value add. Same can be said for some CSMs (holding 5 or less customers). VMware has become bloated and it is time for some people to leave. Sorry if that stings, it’s simply the truth.

People don't want to see it but it is so true. Having worked in several PS functions in both pre- and post-sales I can say that VMware does need a cut. A big one. Don't get me wrong - I feel sorry for the individual, but from business perspective there's just too much bloat.

I used this example a few times, but having worked with a marketing department that includes directors and VPs, I always asked - WHY - these guys weren't even working for external facing material but purely internal. Do you really need a department that costs millions of dollars to work on internal whitepapers ?

No, you don't.

You know when I started to look for a new job ? When I realised how big our department was and I was honest to myself realising that my workload per week can / could be compressed easily in a day or two per fortnight. The majority of me being busy was participating in useless meetings where the content could easily be discussed in a single mail or slack.

I had three hour meetings where the outcome was literally 'we need another meeting to discuss'.

So yea - as former VMware employee I feel sorry for the individuals and wish you guys good luck. But also suggest reflecting on yourself and your own position and ask yourself - am I making an impact - is the impact visible ... Am I a Wiliam Lam type person that everybody knows .... you are not ? Then maybe reconsider your future.
