Open Positions and Recent Hiring

Has anyone confronted their managers about their teams being shorthanded? My manager said he isn't getting any qualified applicants for our engineering team. That and the number of open positions approved is half of what the team needs to be whole. WTF

And not much better, I have heard bad things about new hires on other teams. I am not sure if it's just a recent problem though

Yes they need people but I hear/know Wolfspeed is paying a lot more with respect to GF

It is the same with Wolfspeed. I heard some departments are so short of staff. They are getting people with heart beats and "cross train" them.

@6txf @1qjb on one hand I'm jealous and I say more power to them if they can milk (defraud?) a company with no consequence... but it's super frustrating because me and my coworkers have to pick up the slack and get nothing from it.

I'm a technician. My management team keeps hiring people that can't or won't do the work. It isn't glamorous, but it's honest work that's interesting to at least some of us. If they can't hire people who will show up ready to learn with basic reading and writing skills, they should stop hiring and focus on retention.

I agree that this seems like a welfare scheme. One half my MT team can't/won't/isn't medically cleared to actually work on equipment.

Yes but GF is notorious for being the LOWEST in compensation. That on top of their work environment culture reputation; we have positioned ourselves as the boogieman of the semiconductor world. Top tier name brand companies have the same openings and are paying 20% more. So it’s a no brainer.

GF is the cheap knockoff sneaker company in semiconductor world. The kids want to go work for Nike (Intel, apple, sec, etc.) plus those top tier companies look better on your resume providing measureable career advancement. Again there is absolutely no upside at all to go to Globalfoundries. It’s a downgrade. Only those down on their luck with no other prospects come to GF.

There aren't enough people in the job market to fill all the vacant roles. I know that people have a knee jerk reaction, but there have been 1.05 million deaths, 265,000 of which are between 18 and 64.

Then factor in the rise of people on disability, depending on where you get data from, it's between 1 and 3.4 million more individuals out on disability in regards to long covid or directly impacted by the pandemic.

At the low end there's 1 million working age people out of the workforce.

On top of that immense weight on our economic and medical system, you have the younger generation 18 - 24 yo simply opting out of the workforce. There is zero financial or social pressure to pursue a traditional career.

The median housing price is now over $300k with interest rates going up. The average rent for a 1BR studio apartment in the US is over $1100.

It'll cost $40k to get a 2 year degree to start making $20 an hour here at GF in Malta.

Last I checked there were nearly 300 open positions for GF in Malta. There are no good employees coming until the wages reflect the state of the economy and the local cost of living. And even then you still need more people to fill the roles that are open.

I've heard about issues with new hires. Seems like more than half are just seat warmers or are gaming GF from day one (and successfully so).

Someone posted about "GF welfare" before and I see what they mean now, or at least I've only recently noticed. It's never clear at what level the mismanagement is.

Your manager is right about the lack of quality candidates. Our group did several rounds of interviews with applicants, and it was brutal. Some were more interested in what was going to be dr-g tested than actively participating in the interview. We ended up not taking anyone, because it was easier for us to forge forward, as a team, and wait for the right person.

The fab seems to be staffing more for MTs but a lot are on medical leave on and new ones untrained so still short handed

Let me share the hiring philosophy for the newly crowned Singapore SVP when he was the GM for the past decade. Replacements are rarely given one-to-one especially when the module and PI were collapsing with the new fab, ramping and mass resignation.

After the hiring manager has finalized the candidate, he will drag the approval and good candidates usually secured other better offers. A few months later, he will approve the hiring after multiple justifications again. Hiring managers or HR often need to go down their preference list just to fill the headcount and these people are usually the rejects. This SVP only wants these rejects as he can pay them peanuts and they cannot leave easily despite the toxic environment. That is how GF (first GIGA and then Fab7) ended up with a lot of underpaid and non-performing employees.

With the labor shortages, many of these rejects found jobs elsewhere lately and GF definitely suffers disproportionately compared to other fabs in Singapore.

College grads take job at GF because of poor grades and no other company gave offer. They quit after two years when the grades are not as important and now have experience.
GF/NYS is not the place to start your career if you have options.

I got a very similar response from my manager. There weren’t any qualified candidates. Oddly a lot were from Mexico City?? We then discussed how no one wants to work for Globalfoundries. The word is out -this place is horrible place to work or have a career. Globalfoundries reputation is out and established within the semiconductor community. Even new grads seem to know to stay away. Especially when there are significantly better options out there that pay a lot more (20-30%)out there. So we are seeing the desperate and rejects apply.

HR, management and leadership all very aware of this. And won’t change or adjust. Their logic is - if you come to Globalfoundries you are desperate for work so we don’t and won’t pay competitive salaries. We have you by the ba--s and you take and like what we give you - because you are here knocking on our door and clearly without any other options. It’s a vicious self fufilling cycle. Until they change we will continue to get and take “unqualified” candidates.
