Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Sanborn going to Norfolk Southern

From NS, what can we expect with Cindy Sanborn heading our way to be COO? We got rid of one PSR flunky that’s laid off 6,200 since he hired on. Hopefully she’s not the same or worse. Thanks, I know you all have had it rough also.

Cindy Sanborn came to the UP as A refugee from the CSX. COO to Regional VP. As soon as Jim Vena came on board she was done at the UP. Let’s see if she learned PSR while she was watching Jim work his “magic”.

@1nus UP is aware that they are top-heavy. It’s also a fact of corporate life that cuts happen from the bottom up. Now that those in middle and upper management have done their part to cut costs, it’s their turn to get thrown under the bus. Rinse, wash, and repeat until you get to the c-suite. This is how America does business.

Yes I am aware of how many have been let go at UP. As I stated in the post, more people have been let go at UP compared to NS, but NS is a much smaller company so the percentage is greater at NS. This isn’t a contest to see who is suffering the most, rather I was just pointIng out that we are not the only RR that is going through this process. Employees are suffering in all the class 1 railroads that have embraced PSR. And also that we are not to the stage in the process yet where NS has made most of the cuts possible and are now looking for other ways to cut costs, including short lining sections of their RR. These are facts, not opinions.

Ok please tell the rest of us how the NS is doing more cuts than the UP. Are you aware exactly how many people have been let go at the UP?

NS is actually doing more cuts than UP so far. They are short lining almost everything that isn’t a premium route. NS has traditionally been more fiscally conservative than the other class 1 railroads and they take any measure possible to cut costs. They are a smaller company than UP, so their total number of layoffs to ours is skewed. PSR is having a negative effect on both companies employees, but neither company appears to be backing off. I have friends at NS that tell me to watch out for branch lines to begin short lining as NS claims they make the same profit by farming this out, and without the liability issues of having their own employees do the work. I wish things were different, but I fear the only change we will have is more cuts and layoffs.

I don't care if she goes to the NS. I would like to know why she's leaving the UP. A certain someone in the top position has said numerous times that the UP is well positioned for growth. Ok so if the UP is well positioned for growth, then why are managers and executives leaving or being demoted? Anyone?

Honestly, 9 out of 10 UP employees didn't even know who she was. Never heard much from her or about her. J.V. is the one that crashed and burned the place when he got here as COO. That's the one you need to worry about.

was she really a PSR expert? why did harrison fire her if so? she'd been at csx for 30 years before harrison even got there. he fired her after 6 months.

Well if it goes the same way it did at the UP, then you'd better prepare. It's still ugly at the UP, and her heading to the NS can only mean one thing. Im sure its not what you want to hear, but its the truth. She came to the UP to help run the catastrophic plan of PSR. Many good people lost their jobs because of it. I'm sure the NS corporate elites will say it's necessary, when in fact its not. It's always about increasing profits to shareholders, and always will be. If they do what the UP did, then they'll come up with some BS to distract from the real concerns. All I can say is DO NOT TRUST HER!
