GM offers buyouts to ‘majority’ of U.S. salaried workers

  • General Motors will offer voluntary buyouts to a “majority” of its U.S. white-collar employees, according to a letter sent to workers Thursday from CEO Mary Barra.
  • GM expects to take a pretax charge of up to $1.5 billion related to the buyouts, according to a public filing Thursday by the company.
  • It comes after the Detroit automaker said last week it would terminate about 500 salaried positions globally.

With respect to the 500 people that were already let go....

Do you know they were truly poor performers? I heard rumors that the rankings this year were based on a bell curve like back in school. Setting that aside, what if some of them just had a subpar year. In the past they would have been placed on a PIP with the opportunity to bring their game up. Not so this year I'm told. Also, as a past participant in a better place now, there is not really anyway to object to what ends up in your review. All very subjective and one-sided. Management, especially those not qualified, can layer this pretty much anyway they want.

Nope, I think that this was in the works for a little while now and the initial ISP group was for effect. Very sad to see that this is how they are treating employees now. Good luck to those who role the dice.....

"it is not fair for these 500 people if they leave them out"

Okay troll. I see that you've posted this under every thread.
For the millionth time, people fired for poor performance don't get perks. They get shown the door. They don't deserve the same perks higher performers get. OKAY? GET IT?

I got let go in 2019. Best thing that ever happened to me. I didn’t know it at the time but it was. I changed professions and they immediately made me a supervisor. Something GM couldn’t see, even with all my leadership experience. With OT, I’m making 35-45k more that what GM was paying me. And I am appreciated. Something I never felt at GM IT.

you want to cut costs? Get rid of the company car benefit for level 8 and above. It wastes so much money.

Should you feel safe? Ask yourself the following questions:

*Do you get along with your co-workers?
*Do you get recognized for doing good work?
*Do you get along with your supervisor and other leadership?
*Do you have a network of cooperative friends?
*Does your name come up as a problem solver and do people come to you for training and advice?
*Have you avoided trips to HR?
*Do you volunteer for events and show up regularly to meetings?
*Are you a visibly productive team member that is well respected?

If you answered "no" to any of those questions, you are not safe and you do have something to worry about.

Everyone thinks the involuntary layoffs that will happen in a month or two will hit other people and not them.

To your point, regarding the 500, I wonder if one of the the intents was to get workers to look and see if their managers/execs were let go.

I believe the 500 were sacrificial in order to get people talking and get everyone's attention. Now they are going for something bigger offering buyouts to their salaried employees who know that if targets aren't met then the layoffs will happen. So now, the people i know still working there are reminiscing to a few years ago when the last great purge occurred.

Looks like another round of trying to come up with additional millions to throw at an All EV platform that’s not ready. Have the engineers figured out how to make one that doesn’t burn my house down if it is plugged into my garage overnight? Time for new leadership.

To be honest - 500 doesn't sound like much esp thru attrition. Something really smells - 500 doesn't make national news. I suspect GM has a magic number in mind and it's much bigger than 500. I suspect there will be a recession and frankly new cars are unobtanium for most people now. Something's gotta give... Buckle up - turbulence ahead.

How many high level executives will be asked to take the buyout and leave? Or be "not layed off" if they don't get the numbers they are looking for.

They are offshoring their engineering and other salaried staff. That is what this is about. Too bad they won’t offshore their executives.

I am further grateful that i was laid off in 2019. I put in my 3years; had my fun and gave my all but don't think I want to work for Mary Barra nor Mark Reuss leadership

A lot of people won't volunteer, and will get laid off with much less generous severance afterwards

For those still working there who think that there is a path up the ladder still available....I might reconsider that train of thought.
