Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Will things ever change?

I feel like Exxon is the only place where people keep failing and then getting promoted for it. I don't know about you, but I'm sick of seeing those who mess up in a major way not only get away with it but be rewarded for their failures. Considering that this behavior is not tolerated in the majority of other companies, it is demoralizing to see it occur here over and over again. Will things ever change?

EM culture is based on a person moving up the ladder based on how many people that He/She can step on, or blame, or take credit for their work.

Successful cultures are based on leadership abilities and proven capabilities.

EM execs are convinced that the highly political forced ranking system achieves that latter.

This is a never ending circle where the ones with power to solve the problem do not see the problem.

@2tsa That’s not what gaslighting is and that isn’t what’s going on here.

Several comments on several threads have explicitly referred to hot-desking as “dehumanizing”, which means at least some people posting here see it as violating their human rights.

When it was pointed out that this is ridiculously overheated, almost to the point of satire, some tried to walk it back.

@1bpz+1khOSbBn, why the gaslighting? Who said it was a human rights violation?

@1cxr The people complaining about how hot-desking is a violation of their human rights (not even a joke, scroll down a few threads) would last ten minutes working at Tesla, or any other company with hands-on executive leadership and high performance expectations.

I get some of the company stuff sucks but this entitlement of Exxon is THE worst company ever, in the history of business ever and forever and never ever will anyone ever be worse is pathetic.

Yes some of it sucks but holy cow, go work else where and see what it’s like.

Try Honeywell and see how you like it. Or Tesla. Or some of the smaller companies and see how many layoffs occur. Etc etc

Didn’t you guys see Ba-f bragging about his World Cup Final tickets?
That’s what cr---y managers get.
Cronyism, incompetence, and arrogance is rewarded.
The company profits despite what these dumm!es do.

@1fgy Or the guy with woman/mommy issues who thinks middle-aged white men are an oppressed minority.

The truth of the matter is, when commodity prices are high, exxon performs well, and vice versa. Management doesn’t matter, and thus can be thoroughly incompetent.

Amazing how everyone seems to think Exxon is the worst company on the planet and every else must be so much better.

Go work elsewhere and realise the grass isn’t always greener. I think sometimes those who complain on here haven’t ever worked elsewhere because a lot of other companies are terrible.

It's a survival game at this point. If you are more competent then your manager and/or above, and people recognize that, then you will, without doubt, be pushed down by them and/or PIP'ed to save their jobs.

It's never going to change for the peon employees. As long as the shareholders and the executives are happy, that's all that matters to the corporation.

@1jbu+1khOSbBn Agreed, kinda like the chick that’s on here defending her actions on every post. That’s the cancer that’s ruining this company.

Here we go again.

@1jbu Nobody was “forced” to do anything.

Almost everyone who was walked out the door had already retired in place, and had months or even years of poor performance leading up to their removal. These are people who stopped applying themselves, didn’t learn anything new, wouldn’t share what they knew, and complained constantly.

Truth be told, EM performance standards are as basic and easy as it gets. Those of you who posted your fantasies about getting hired on at large tech companies for 2,000% raises would in reality have been instantly crushed by the ruthless meritocracy that is the basis of tech working culture. That’s assuming that you would have able to able to work with transgender colleagues or take directions from a woman boss (unlikely from what I’ve seen here).

TL;DR: The lowest performers in a company and industry made up of low performers are being let go, and rightly so. Deal with it.

If we don’t reward failure, how could anyone ever take a chance?

What’s disappointing are the number of competent colleagues who were PIP’d or forced out while horrible individuals are protected and even promoted.

@1jox+1khOSbBn It’s bigger than that. Same scenario in other specialized support groups also.

Seems like it’s the only company where people fail upwards which goes against all logic. Managers don’t want to have the tough conversation and instead just praise these people and pass them along.

They exist everywhere I’m sure but Baton Rouge appears to have more than its fair share. Just step into the Infra. BT…..if you know you know.

You are spot on. I know a lot of supervisors that were total failures in their discipline. Don’t get me wrong there are some good ones but most bombed in actually doing work. Hats even worse is the ones that bo-b as supervisors aren’t disciplined. They are simply shuffled to other positions. I see it getting worse and not better at least in Baton Rouge.

Exxon just made record profits? What incentive is there for management to change?
