Do we need 3 HDD companies in the world?

with shipments going down so much.
WD & Toshiba HDD merge?
Same logic as SD and Kioxia.

2 looser joining

IMHO the replacement rate will not be linear, but instead it will be exponential. Flash/SSD is just way more versatile in terms of form factors and use cases.

@1hzm+1p4iwbDm if your referencing client flash, we know that transition was underway and was already underway, but enterprise flash is unlikely to replace HDD data center drives for years

The SD acquisition was the right idea which poorly executed. To be relevant as a data storage company, WD needed to get ready to replace HDD and to secure NAND supplies for HGST SSD. But somehow they fumbled the Enterprise SSD segment and we're now practically irrelevant in that field.
Unlike tape, HDD may not be appropriate as backup media and eventually will be replaced by SSD in matter of time.
Opportunities in NAND and SSD are there, just a matter of execution.

will this be the great thing that secures WD's future, that's an unknown, but that's what many believed and espoused to the masses with the acquisition of SD, and here we are

The merger will result in 5 major players to become 4. There will be hurdles just like WDC HGST merger, butIt will happen.

"Still, it remains unclear if overseas regulators, including Chinese authorities, approve the merger as semiconductors have been increasingly important in ensuring economic security across the globe."
