Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Impaired health

I stayed in this company longer than I originally planned. I was trying to find another option, but at the moment nothing is much better than what I’m already doing, and in the meantime I’m afraid of being fired because I don’t even have the strength to work as before. My health has deteriorated significantly and I got caught in a vicious cycle - I am still staying here because in this state I think I am not welcome in any other company. Has anyone been in a similar situation? How much has your health suffered at Macy’s?

There must be desperation going on there. I was a Flex employee who when the pandemic hit I was not eligible for the two weeks pay others got. I thought 'Fine.' at least I know how I am thought of. I had started to notice at the beginning of the year how people with decades of employment were barely getting hours to qualify for benefits. Also, some were let go with no warning on the spot. I was getting called in to work consistently. I refused to do three hours. Once I realized how there were no hours much for the people who had decades there, I was not taking any extra hours away from them. Seemed to me that me being Flex at $9 an hour was part of a reason for employees who had decades of employment scrounging for hours. I had not heard anything from the company after the one company wide information about the pandemic in April I believe it was. Out of the blue, I get a voicemail that was sketchy and I got out of it I had 'suddenly' showed up on the schedule computer generated in November after almost NINE MONTHS of nothing! Something I made out saying if I didn't feel safe. I am 69 years old. The age where I am considered high risk and especially if other health issues. I had to wonder why anyone after not wanting to give an employee a measley two week check, had not contacted in NINE MONTHS, who is 69 years old would even contemplate they would feel safe!? Maybe had they not cast aside all the loyal employees lke garbage they would not be scrounging 69 year old workers that they did not care about. It was even more suspicious when a worker from there whom I had not heard from since the pandemic hit in March sent me a text saying Happy Thanksgiving! I wonder why no texts for Easter, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, etc. to say the least. I was just insulted that they would not figure if their system had not shown the employee working since March due to pandemic, who is sitting around waiting on them for $9 an hour?

If you get hurt, consult with a private attorney. Many do not charge until case is settled and that's if you will get a positive outcome. If you don't have a case, they will let you know in advance. Chances are, they will know about your employer and the unethical tactics and will give you the best defense possible. It doesn't hurt to try.

I did report to corporate and had to get a lawyer for workman’s company claim. Big dirt bag Macy’s tries to chew down to nothing when they set up a unsafe environment to work for everyone. My shoulder still hasn’t healed.

Couldn't be worse than getting hurt on the job and them refuing to pay the bills, fire you because you are not getting back on your feet fast enough. Yes, it happened. That's the company I worked for and made sacrifices for.

@1hoz If your story is true why didn't you report your injuries? You were at Macy's 7.5 years. Everybody knows you never rely on management to report injuries because it is a black mark on their record.

I worked in women shoes. I wasn’t planning on staying long. Then 7.5 years flew by. We had runners who didn’t do their job . I found myself doing the runners job 90% of the day. Then finish line wouldn’t show up to work and I had to do their job. Meanwhile my useless manager wouldn’t help and the sales supervisor would disappear for hours on end and no one knew where she was. This went on for two years. One day I hit my shoulder running thru stock room displaced my collar bone was in severe pain had to leave work went to hospital told it was my shoulder Toto chiropractor which I did same day. He put my shoulder back into place being it was dislodged. I called out next few days. Came back and my shoulder was in pain for months. I had to take a leave for 3 months and went thru physical therapy during that entire time. I was then laid off in June as part of that cut. My manager never reported my injury .I had a Rotary cuff tear in both my shoulders . I then had other coworkers who was injured running up and down steps for 8-10 hours a day. The words wiped out exhausted doesn’t even give half the feeling on how wiped out I was. I knew it was time to go. Before I left I had to sign docs from former workers who got injured working in the stock room I know that feeling well of being so beyond tired that your brain can’t make a decision to leave. It’s like your stuck mentally. I’ll say this. Take that pay cut !!!! Take that stress cut !!! Long term stress will do more damage to your brain than making less money. I would go thru your life and see where you can cut back on and address all your bills with the pay cut. Do it now don’t wait !! Get out now !! You do not owe Macy’s anything!!!

Take some online classes and build up new skills and a mentality. Shoot for a new goal. You are suffering from low self-esteem and think you cannot do any better but you can and you will. Once you get another job, you are going to feel like a new person and wonder why you did not do so sooner. Your degree is never a waste. There are people in their 40's getting new degrees and licenses. People can make it if they have the right mentality. Every day is a new day and every minute is time you cannot get back. Make the most of it and don't waste it laying in bed and regretting what you can change.

100%. I have given them nine years, which was most of my twenties, when I should have been enjoying life. Foot injury, serious back/neck pain, anxiety off the charts. I spent most of Thanksgiving curled up in my bed. I can barely eat breakfast; my stomach is like a fist. When I do get food down, I have to go to the bathroom right away. The other morning I cried before I even lifted my head from the pillow. I cry when I get there sometimes, and when I get home. My headaches go on for up to five days and no pain reliever helps. My head feels like it's being split in two. I once got so sick from stress with such bizarre symptoms that they ruled out cancer. I recently broke down at work. I don't know how to look for a job. This is all I've ever had. My degree has been wasted because I am too long out of college. With all my health issues, no new job would ever want to deal with me. I'm ready to give up on life and just starve myself to death. Although I can't starve because I binge on junk all day long. You want to know how bad the stress is? Despite bingeing and subsisting on candy, chips, and ice cream every day, I have actually lost a few pounds. That should tell you something.

I'm sorry for this, and I'm sorry for all the pain you guys feel too.

Learn to be okay with doing a bad job. Don't give up your health for your company. Are you going to be thankful to your employer on your deathbed? Or they of you? The idea of working is so you can pay your bills and stay on top of your health - not stay healthy so you can keep working. Figure out your priorities.

I got out at the beginning of the year. Leading up to that point, i was gradually getting worse physically and emotionally. I started my job search I’m September of 2019 and left right after inventory. I’m much healthier and happier. I know longer get stressed or annoyed by the littlest things. I went into a completely different field. Small company run by smart people, not a greed stock traded corporate ghost. And guess what! I’m treated like a human now. I love the people I work with, i love the people we serve, and i never feel overwhelmed or dread going to work. It’s hard work and i have allot on my plate, but i prioritize and stay on top of things. My boss always says “the job is never done. Go home! It’ll be there for you tomorrow!”. My blood pressure has gone down. Even when i went for a Covid test and was slightly nervous, my blood pressure was fine when i was examined by my doctor. He was so happy. Macy’s is toxic. They treat their employees like underlings and love you while your working like a dog. But when you no longer have the physical strength to work that intense, they treat you like you don’t even Exist.

My advice, look until you find something. Even if it means spending just a 1/2 hour every night looking and applying on indeed. (That’s how i found my job).
