I often get the feeling that this company has become a lost cause and that it is too late for changes that would put it back on track. Perhaps I'm overly pessimistic, but unfortunately, that's how it seems to me now. Anyone still has hope that things could get better here?

Unfortunately, BOD and executive committee seem to think that they are perfect and can do no wrong. So they wouldn't point the finger at themselves.
For everything I've posted here, 3M can still be saved. A clean start at the top 2 or so levels of the company can do it. Get a CEO empowered to make the positive changes needed and 3M can easily be saved. Get rid of all the Jack Welch disciples and bring in growth leaders. It would be a hard road to undo 20 years of damage but definitely possible.
All this takes is the BOD to realise that they and the top executives are the problem. Pessimistically, I'm not sure they are self-aware enough to do it.
I tend to agree. Feels like we have a whole generation of McNerney prodigies who only know how to ki-l new innovations in the cradle and layoff experience. Seems like if we manage to suffer through the next 20 years until some new management fad comes along, maybe then we can thrive, but not in the near term.
