Thread regarding ExxonMobil Singapore layoffs

What’s the deal here with not hiring new employees?

Four people left my group in the past 6 months. Important employees. Naturally, all of the workloads of those that left fell on the shoulders of us that are still here. We are overwhelmed with work, struggling to get things done, and the tasks are completed at a much slower pace.
Our manager was aware of the situation at the time but he obviously had no interest in tackling this problem.
In the meantime, my team got a new manager. We spoke with him about this problem, and he promised that he would get on it, and make sure that new people are hired to fill the position of the ones that left. As time passed nothing happened, and he also changed his behavior in the sense that he looked uninterested in solving this problem. I assume that he did ask for new employees but that the decision that that’s not going to happen came from higher tiers.
What’s the deal here? Are they just trying to overwork us to death, or are they trying to make us all quit?

@1hat, are you sure 2022 will be much different?

I think the manager’s hands are tied. There is a hiring freeze. Most competent managers will know when they’re short handed and will ask for another team member. Problem is, no approvals are being given to hire. 2022 will be different though.
