Campus Contraband Checks?

Today walking around Campus, I was stopped by two Security guards and they searched my backpack and scanned me with metal detector.

When did random searches on Campus start? Is this related to a particular event?

@2fjz Sure, you might get lucky.

These are also isolated examples that are the exception to the rule.

I would not rely on luck on a two-way range. It is unlikely that you or anyone you work with has had the training and experience required to neutralize an active sho-ter or any other threat in any foreseeable tactical scenario. You have not practiced live-fire CQB. You haven’t done stress shooting. You don’t know the difference between the light/heavy sides of a room or how to strong-wall.

In other words, you are unlikely to be effective in a close-in firefight, which is what you action-heroes mean when you say “protecting ourselves”. You are not Brian Mills, and you do not have a very particular set of skills.

There’s no rational basis for bringing your we-pon to work. There is some rational basis for contraband checks.

@1oip+1mbyNEr an employee can be barred just by the company having a policy against carrying of we-pons. No signage is required! Texas law overrides this partially by allowing employees to store we-pons in their locked vehicles, but not around campus... again, covered by the company policy.

Those signs at the gates are for "other than employees", since employees are already banned.

Use the intranet search and look it up yourself.

Also: Texas Penal Code Section 30.06 allows a home owner, business owner or commercial landowner to post signage that bars a person with a “Concealed Handgun License” or CHL from entering the premises while carrying a concealed handgun. These signs are colloquially called “thirty-aught-six signs” or “30.06 signage.”

@1oip+1mbyNErt no exception is required. Texas law allows a concealed firearm in an employers parking area in a locked vehicle.

It’d be insane to have it unloaded. 1) most accidental discharges happen when handling. So, why ask someone to unload before coming on campus and increase the risk of discharge? 2) why would I want an unloaded firearm? That’d be like carrying a rock to throw.

They have asked for a form to be filled out listing the we-pons we might bring on campus. That’d be silly too. I am not creating a g-n registry for anyone. Wouldn’t that lie be a great place to start for robbing cars, or creating extra searched as you mentioned? Concealed means concealed from everyone.

EMHC has never allowed loaded firearms on site. There are 30.06 and 30.07 postings at each entry gate. If an employee wants to carry their firearm in their car to campus, then they are required to file an exception and open themselves up to additional searches. Once an employee gets the exception, firearms are to be stored locked and separated from ammunition.

Y’all need to learn how to search the intranet.

It's true. They're performing random checks on campus. I had a visitor from one of our affiliates in and she was stopped for a random bag check near one of the coffee shops in Wellness. The guard took everything out of her knapsack including a jackrabbit for ladies. He actually took it all the way out and then calmly put it back. Put us in a very uncomfortable position for the rest of her visit.

It is within the purview of your corporate employer to bar you from having your firearm on their property.

Assuming that the heightened security measures are reactive, one possibility is that they received a report of a credible threat. Assuming that the measures are proactive, they may be pushing ahead with an unpopular policy (ex. mass layoffs), and are putting in a security cushion in advance of that policy. If that were the case, it would be logistically simpler to just have everyone WFH and conduct the layoffs remotely, so that might rule out a mass in-person layoff scenario.

That leaves either a report of a credible threat or paranoia on the part of some VIPs as the leading contenders for what’s driving heightened security measures. All I can say for certain is that it’s unusual for a large multinational corporation to shake-down their white collar workforce with contraband checks.

@gnv My thoughts exactly.

One possible scenario is that someone who was let go made a credible threat on the way out the door. Another is that someone known to work at the location where the searches are happening said something on social media that raised red flags.

Heightened security measures cost money, and are rarely implemented without reason. Something is up.

If those Dallas Execs would create a sense of Pride in EM employees instead of PIPs and Hotdesking, then they would not be paranoid and require Contraband Checks for employees walking around Campus.

To enter our Fairfax campus (which was former Mobil Oil Corporate Headquarters) all visitors had to be screened through a metal detector.

Metal detectors and inspection of laptops and carrying cases is standard practice when CEO's and the Management Committee also resides in the building.

Get used to random inspections when Dallas Corporate Headquarters is officially residing in The Woodlands this summer.
