Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM Systems

Ric Lewis from HPE was announced as SVP, does this mean major cuts incoming?
what are predictions for power, storage and mainframes?

I think Tom Rosamillia going to C&C indicates systems is doomed.

What are your thoughts?

People in Austin are jumping ship as fast as they can trying to land jobs at AMD, Nvidia and other places. The first two are cherry picking people as they grow their hw/sw/fw Austin teams. Its getting really ugly, people who hesitate will find out its too late and the jobs are all filled if they do not jump ASAP, assuming they will take them, they are not taking bodies, they only want the best of the best

@1fbq+1bD34kMD has no idea what he's talking about. JW isn't moving into Consulting, he's becoming a "special advisor to AK", that's code for he'll spend the next couple of months helping with the transition while negotiating his exit package before leaving completely. They've already removed him from the external facing Executive Bio page.

There's no "merging" of Linux Intel with Linux Mainframe, Linux has been multiplatform for a long time and Z was running Linux long before IBM bought RH. That statement doesn't even make any sense.

IBM has been running internally as a two division company (ITU and ISU) since earlier in the year but the re-org has been a complete ab0rtion. GM was supposed to go away but now RT is leading it, what?

GBS has never been and never will be "centered around mainframe".

Here are a couple of observations

  1. IBM seems to be setting the stage for Systems to be broken up (SVP leaving, new HPE Exec in, who has spin-off experience, and C&C Exec stepping aside).
  1. Whitehurst has zero to very little mainframe experience, and IBM is now two years into the Redhat absorption. It was logical for him to step aside from the day to day operation of “legacy” IBM, and move into consulting. Remember he was the CFO for Delta, so how much mainframe experience is he contributing. NOTICE he didn’t leave, but rather is hanging around to consult (the hanging around could be to cash out, but it’s more likely to execute the merging of LINUX Intel with LINUX of mainframe)
  1. Power will be mined purely for its IP content. IBM can’t sell it, but too many others (Samsung being the big nut) have too much invested to just let it go. IP is the way to pacify all parties and still make some money.
  1. IBM is doubling down on Mainframe strategy Moving Rosamillia to C&C, moving Whitehurst to consulting, moving Lewis (HPE) into a declining division, and De-emphasizing systems scale out are all indications IBM is consolidating around the mainframe strategy. Look for IBM to emerge in 3rd q as a two division company. GBS and Cognitive both centered around mainframe.

Tom moving is interesting, but he has had other jobs, what will be interesting is seeing what the other VPs and GMs in systems do. That will be a telling sign of things to come.

So in the end, what does all of this mean? That IBM is essentially going to become the biggest pusher of Linux in the Fortune 1000 space?

Think that means there will be a push to figure out how to migrate z/OS and z/VM services to Linux-Cloud and market said conversions?

IBM will pay someone to take Power away…

People saying IBM will sell Power, who do you think will buy it? Because I can't think of anybody.

one of the worst kept secrets in power is that they have been trying to sell it for years but can't find a buyer, might end up getting whatever they can for it and do a fireside sale like GF where we actually paid them to take it from us.

Anybody still at power is just waiting to retire or can't find anything outside or just too afraid to make a move because they have been in one place so long, its scary to make big changes, but once you jump you will see its worth it

AK is going to remove Paul Cormier as CEO of Red Hat so he (AK) can take over that Kingdom… just clearly understand who AK is… he is a tyrant, a dictator, a total despote…

If he jettisons Systems, that is the end of IBM, period.

What is the scope of "Systems" ?

How does it relate to "Cloud and Cognitive"?

How does "Cloud and Cognitive" relate to RedHat?

Being a zSeries person, supporting legacy products, all of this is something I don't quite follow. Could use some education.

I believe you just watched Rosamillia escape right before IBM IP’s off systems. That Rosamillia landed in Whitehurst’s old job says A lot about legacy vs Intel

Well i used to think MF was a main part not because of revenues but because of customer lock in and pictching cloud to same customers.

But now i think they're going to treat it just like another part of systems. Maybe it'll see some cuts?
Power will be spun off. More cuts for storage i guess.

Person from hp doesn't give me much hope.

It’s actually strange Systems has lasted this long. I thought it would go before GTS.
