Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Opportunity beyond 27?

As the company headcount shrinks in size, are the opportunities for roles beyond 27 shrinking also? What is concerning to me is that I'm seeing high cls being put into 28 level roles. Even some people seem to be taking "demotions".... What about the folks at currently at 26/27? Where do you go if the 28-29 people don't have anywhere to go? Maybe some real discussion would be nice vs the normal responses on this site.

Chemicals has historically promoted too many people into these levels. With the consolidation of F&L and chemicals, chemicals is slowing down all promotions to match closer to F&L slower promotion timeline.

There is no technical ladder just a well that’s empty. Malaysian communist took care of that.

Why do ya’ll assume that you are capable of working a real CL 28/29 job? Sure, there are way too many examples of incompetent people in those jobs today, but everyone on this site seems to agree that can’t be sustainable. Don’t expect the company to ever make that mistake again.

ExxonMobil is not a company for a longterm career anymore. In finance we removed that talking point for new recruits. There are fewer supervisor/manager roles and many will be capped at CL 27 doing same work as new hires but paid more than double new hires so that will hurt their assessment. They’ll still be paid very well that it’ll be difficult to leave for more money.

Not a bad deal to get a small boost in retirement income......fair trade I say.

Two years after Exxon acquired Mobil Oil, the President of the Chemical Company decided that we had too many CL-30+ executives. He demoted CL-30's to CL-29's.

The demoted CL-29's kept their salary, but they did not receive a raise for 5+ years and they did not receive their executive rewards for the rest of their careers.

The answer is YES, we do demote high salary groups to lower salary groups.

CL-27 engineers that are retirement eligible will be promoted to CL-28 so that they can be the next NSI/NI candidates that year.

Technical roles for degrees engineers can go to 28 and 29 but mostly to provide that rank group with a bottom layer so no sponsorship people have to get ranked low.

OP and for all those new hires and mid career employees, listen. There's almost no chance you will make it beyond 27 because that is the max in India. And employees at BTC cost one third of what you cost. So you will be laid off way before you make it to 27 because there is an indian guy willing to do your job for one third of the price. Stop thinking about a career at Exxon. That's a thing of the past. Look for another company that cares about you and will give you a long term career. Here we are all contractors.

In our refinery and petrochemical plants, above CL-27 is reserved for the plant manager, operations manager, technical manager, and perhaps the engineering manager.

All other positions max out at CL-27.

The only exception is that if you transfer into a refinery and petrochemical plant for a rotational assignment and remain on EMTEC (former EMRE) career ladder, you can be a CL-28 and above for the temporary assignment in the operating unit.

Getting above 27 at site in technical ladder is very difficult. There used to be a time where you can do a stint in EMRE/EMTEC and come back to site and they bump you to 28. These days, EMTEC jobs are going to KL or KL expat, that door is pretty much slammed shut.

The sad part, salary jump is quite big from 27 to 28.....so it's definitely more than just bragging rights.

This is just going back to the way it was before the great CL inflation of the last decades. None of the younger mid-career CL29 working for me are capable of working even at what we would have called CL27 positions a few decades ago.

What's a CL 27 pay these days in USA? Any bonus at that level or still only straight base pay?

CL matters when you're ba----g your head against the payband and you can't get anymore money out of this place until you are promoted.

What technical ladder? If you take a closer look at all the STPs, you will find many of them are parking spots for ex-managers!

Agree with these posts, technical roles will top out at 27, which isn't a surprise as the majority will be staffed in India also.

Technical career path in the company is being run down, this is in flight without question.

Some gratuitous advice - stop obsessing over CLs. It doesn’t mean a thing. Get a life. Apply your energies to something more rewarding and enlightening instead of being stuck on a hamster wheel.

For the next 5-7 years, until a lot of retirements and attrition occurs, there will be way too many 28-29 people, and not nearly enough 28-29 roles. In the meantime, promotions beyond 27 will be drastically slowed. Executive roles have been trimmed and will continue to be, and more people will finish their careers as CL 27/28 as max potential (even though in CC you may show up as a 34 potential for a while, everyone knows you aren’t really exec potential unless you’re 38 POT).
