Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Severance

Anyone get it yet? Usually I get my paychecks on Thursdays. This one has yet to arrive.

  1. 4% is huge. But I think it's done that way on purpose so you don't get in trouble for owing more taxes. Depending on your own tax situation, such as when you get your next gig, salary, etc, you will get the excess back during next tax filing. BTW, our year end bonus payout is taxed heavily too, compared to your usual deductions. I always wind up with with a big refund from both federal and state though as a result.

Right! I knew 1/3 would be removed for taxes. I hope this is informative to all of you employed folks who have made comments like “well you got the severance” that “huge payout” or “ you’re lucky you got the severance”. However I’m sure the director, VP payouts look a lot different than for most of us.

I’m in TX too: You forgot about Social security and Medicare withholding: adds up to appx 8%. So we should be at appx 30% withholding total. It’s like a bonus.

Important to remember this is just what’s being withheld, technically not what we’re ultimately “taxed” after filing for the year. But I agree taking a larger withholding from a severance vs normal pay isn’t ideal. We all have to wait a year to sort it out when we file.

I see the deposits in my 3 banks - Schwab, BofA and Truist as pending this morning. It doesn’t look like it includes COBRA based on severance tax rate of 22% federal tax rate (I’m in Texas so no state IT). Will have to wait for the pay stubs to see how they managed to take away so much money out of the pittance they paid.

I see it in my B of A account as pending. We should get a statement in the mail with the details. I got a mailed statement for my vacation payout.

I see the deposit. And like someone noted here- insane taxes on it. I wish the govt exempted severance from tax until you get another job. If there’s a time to help people out, it is between severance and a new job. Oh well.

I have a pending deposit for 01/19 but it is not for the severance + COBRA. Given the amount, it is either a refund for ESPP or remaining PTO.

Mine is now in my bank account, assume it’s the COBRA and severance lump sum combined, but without seeing the paystub can’t tell for sure.

Also, I’m wondering about the ESPP deduction residuals refund, not sure if that’s included either.
